Description
Dubas is a very good drafter, should still be able to find depth guys in the mid/late rounds as he has done, which is really all we need.

This essentially puts the Leafs all in on the next two years.

Hartman is going to cost more.. 30 goal scorer for under 2 mil with years left is two first round assets to start the conversation.

Considering that they've been missing their 1C for most of the year, and have their core signed long term, I'd imagine a sell-off is pretty unlikely. Far more likely that they'll double down when everyone is healthy.

probably, though I don't agree with it. Could get good value for some players and still remain semi-competitive out of respect for Ovie's record chase.

why? produces less, one year less on his contract, suspended for significant portions of many seasons so you take on that risk as well.

Wilson would cost a ton. Probably more than what the Leafs are willing to pay, given the lack of a true high end prospect in the system.

i agree im just bored. None of this is realistic I totally recognize that, realistically probably getting one rental FWD and a depth D which I hope means ROR.

Yeah, I mean, futures are fun, but Washington has Ovi, Backstrom, Oshie, Carlson, Kuznetsov, Kuemper, and Wilson signed for multiple years, all of whom have NTC's/modified NTC's. That doesn't necessarily mean they're contenders, but prospects and picks are for peasants. I also wouldn't exactly call a late 1st, a pending UFA forward, and Robertson. *IF* the Caps retained 50% for 1.5 years of Wilson, I've gotta think the return is higher end.

That rep that he once was isn’t what he is now, he is a 60 point power forward. He will cost you more than you want to pay

not disputing his value, and do want to point out that I 0% think this is realistic, purely bored in exam season. But he has never eclipsed 60 points in his career, that's not what he is. Good for 17-22 goals and low 40s to low 50s in points. He will likely cost more than teams are willing to pay, and I likely lowballed here, agreed on that.

I apologize for saying he was a 60 point winger. I know if he was fully healthy this year he could have 100% reached that. I pretty sure he was on pace for 60 points once. He’s a 50 point winger. He gets better and better every year and this year is a major set back. Hopefully he gets back on track and continues his tear.

most likely true yes. I knew its likely a no, and to be clear i'm bored and 1000% know all of this will not happen. But hypothetically, if I'm them, I keep some guys and make moves around the fringes that might bring in some value - Wilson, Mantha, Strome, possibly even Kuzy if Backstrom comes back and is good enough, Jensen, and so on. So you still have a formidable team around Ovi to go get that record and stay in the hunt for the playoffs maybe, but move some of the younger guys still in their prime that you could use to at least help to plan for the post Ovi-Backstrom-Carlson era.

I decided to give them another NHL body for that reason in Kerfoot that they could either keep and maybe extend, or flip at the deadline. Then with Robertson again they very well might go for a better prospect if they went their route, but he's an NHL ready prospect and few teams will give those away. They at least get a guy to play and maybe help the team stay afloat short term while starting to think about the long term.

Probably the case that the value is off in favour of the Leafs, just trying to explain my rationale for at least the base premise of a Wilson deal.

I mean granted he is injured right now, but Wilson really is so much more then points. He wins every battle, he creates a lot of space, he is a leader and BELOVED in the locker room, its hard to overstate how much he impacts games,. and yeah he can still produce on a top 6 level. I would only trade him for a huge haul otherwise I'd rather the caps keep him if just to be there as an example for the next generation of caps players.

has the potential to crack 60 on a career year, yes. Probably over the next few years will be a 50 point bulldozer, who very well might crack 60 in the right situation playing his best hockey.

Just confused as to the direction of the Caps right now as I'm sure many fans are. Understand the need to help Ovie achieve the goal record and stay in the playoff hunt, but I personally think that can be done while still starting to think about the future by recouping value for Wilson, Mantha, Strome, Jensen, etc. Can still keep some core guys like Backy and Oshie and Carlson to help keep competitive, but start to plan for the future. If Backy comes back good I'd personally even entertain moving Kuznetsov, maybe in the offseason.

agreed. And maybe you do keep him through the next gen. But at the same time he'll get a big contract and generally speaking his style of game doesn't always age so well. Very well might get a better haul than this, but on a more general level I think WSH should stay decent for Ovie but also need to start thinking about the future. No offense, but the cup window is a couple of years gone at this point.

Oh for sure...no critique on trying to get him, he's a super fun dude to put on the roster...that's why I'd figure there'd be around 15-20 teams that would be in the hunt for him. I'd say if you offered Knies+1st+Sandin for someone like Wilson retained+Nick Jensen it'd make some sense for the Caps, but I also don't think that's particularly bright for the Leafs, and would (will?) likely get me absolutely skewered on here for even contemplating it tears of joy

I personally don't think the Leafs need to make a big, bold move though...get a bit of depth for mid-round picks leading up to the deadline, and roll with it! The worst part of all of this is that you're inevitably playing one of Boston, Tampa, or Florida in the 1st round, and if it's Florida, I'm 99.99% sure they're going to do something wild and wacky to upgrade their d-core.

Edit: This is just me entertaining the thought, while also being bored.

Lol I'd die if they traded that package for Wilson. I don't necessarily think we do need a massive move either. I thought we did on D when Muzzin went down. I knew what we had in Liljegren as a really effective top 4 D today, but Sandin hadn't quite shown what we all knew he was capable of until now. Man if he keeps this up, he's everything we thought he might be. Gio on 800K is a crime against the economic principles of a free market, and Holl at his best is such an effective stay at home D, and he's been so good with Gio. Team defense by the forrwards over last couple years has developed into something quite impressive too. Large reason as to why the D has been able to hold up as well as it has, and why the goalies have been able to find their way a bit (LOL campbell and mrazek btw)

Depth scoring is #1 need, personally think we can get by on LW, especially if Knies comes in and earns a top 9 role in some capacity and adding a top tier center would be overpowered. Really want ROR, but recently starting to wonder if it's smarter to look for someone with ~2yrs on a good contract a la Tampa instead.

To answer the question in the title, the simple answer is no. I would concur with what @krakowitz had to say on the matter, and would just like to add that it recently (within 24 hours) came out that Ovi does not want the team to rebuild and wishes to contend for the length of his stay in DC, so I just can't see any reality where Washington gets rid of Ovi's wing partner while Ovi is still here. Also doesn't hurt that I would expect Wilson to be the next captain once Ovi retires (assuming Oshie isn't still here).

Yeah...you guys are good. The Tampa thought is, IMO, a good one. Not sure who to target, but someone who can play 2LW might not be a bad move. I personally wouldn't bank on Knies just jumping in and running with a top 9 spot. He absolutely *could*, but there aren't a ton of examples of NCAAers who immediately jump in and kill it. McAvoy? Boldy was a stud (and, IMO was a better prospect than Knies), and didn't get put into the lineup for the Wild when he signed (played in the AHL, Wild lost 4-3 in the first round). I don't really know, TBH...Again, pure boredom here tears of joy

yea, don't need him to step in really, we've got enough NHL wingers. Even Joey Anderson looked solid in CGY on the 3rd line, so much so that Keefe plans to give him an extended look there. Would be nice though. Even if he's just OK, and is elevated playing with a guy like ROR perhaps. Wouldn't give him the pressure of being the guy with Marner and JT just get.

But honestly the LW thing is overblown imo. Can do Bunting - Jarnkrok - Kerfoot - ZAR, that's not bad at all. JT and Marner seem to be buzzing regardless of who is on their left. Jarnkrok looked decent playing with them before he got hurt. Turning that 3rd line into a legitimate scoring threat would be far more dangerous imo.

Yeah, again, I don't think you necessarily HAVE to add someone there, but you might as well have the weapons armed and ready to go on the front and back end, because even as a non-Leafs fan, I absolutely KNOW someone really good is going to get hurt.

Again, fringy adds here, and you'd have to make the cap work, but I think I'd see what Kulikov and Nyqvist (with a bunch of retention, obviously) would end up costing. I know, I know...pending UFA's, and the need for Kulikov isn't 100% at this moment, but man, what a solid couple of insurance policies that *shouldn't* cost you much.

Multi-year-wise, I don't know who might even be available. It's fun to think about for sure.
