And just like tha Canucks put their re build into high gear and Wings continue theirs. I bet Yzerman says no thanks and hangs up the phone.

While I would prefer not to move Drury, I’m not opposed to this move. As long as that extension is in the range of 6-6.5mil, I think the Canes might make that.

I've had alot of backlash with that trade for Carolina. I still think it would be very good for the Canes.

Unfortunately Detroit is not trading first round picks even for very good players like Pettersson.

The Canes don’t need Horvat, and I’m still of the opinion that they should make a move for some like JVR to hold them over, but value wise, this move isn’t bad. The biggest problem with signing Horvat long term would be that he would block guys like Rees and Ponomarev, who are both just barely behind Drury in NHL readiness.

I think that a trade like this depends on how much Horvat is willing to take for an extension, if he is willing to resign in Carolina. Because if either of those criteria aren’t met, the trade doesn’t happen, since the Canes don’t make the big rental moves.

Idk, a young player of his caliber who is a C could change Yzerman's mind, I don't think he would be trading 2 1sts though, but he might be willing to do a 1st (maybe not the 2023rd), so perhaps the above proposal minus the 2023 1st and the 3rd. Ethan Bear is just going to be a throw in and not hold a ton of value for them.

Definetly makes a guy want to think about it. 2023 is forsure off the table, it will be a lottery pick even though Detroit is closer to the playoffs now. Hronek has increased his value a bunch so far this season and it would be tough to see him go. I also think that the signings Yzerman made are not long term but are players he plans on trading this year for more picks and he still plans on building through the draft. For the Canucks I'm still disappointed they didn't trade Miller when his value was the highest and address the issue on defence.

I think the offers Vancouver were getting on Miller was a 1st+a defensive prospect which probably didn't really interested them because it doesn't do anything for them now.

As for Yzerman, I don't think he's only trying to build from the draft, the fact is that even as they move towards contention doesn't mean they are making the playoffs especially with them playing in the toughest division. They also have a really good chance at adding a very good player in the 2023 draft who probably joins the team in 2-3 years when they are more competitive. There are also quite a bit of notable guys on expiring contracts that may get traded or just end up FAs like Larkin and Bertuzzi, so there's definitely a need to hold onto those 1st round picks and not trade them for rentals.

I think there is a chance Bertuzzi gets traded but not Larkin, although the longer he goes without an extension the more I worry. Bertuzzi and Yzerman both said they want an extension done so there is also that. I think additions like Kubalik, Perron, Maatta and possibly a few others will be on the move this deadline or next unless they absolutely blow it out of the park with their play.
I think Vancouver had a decent amount of forward depth before signing Kuzmenko and Mikheyev and keeping Miller was a bit of a mistake. Even a first a decent defensive prospect might have been a good call considering the cap situation and lack of defence in the organization. I think the Canucks ownership doesn't want to commit to any kind of rebuild, at least that's my theory, and hence they sign guys and make possibly questionable trades (OEL) to try and stay competitive.

Yeah, it really seems like Vancouver ownership doesn't want to rebuild at all and that's probably why Linden left the organization years back. Vancouver does have too much forward depth imo, and that's why I agree that underselling Miller would have probably made more sense for the long-term outlook. They did seem to recognize that since Garland and Miller were both being shopped during the off-season but looks like no one wants Garland. Now I think they are stuck with trading Horvat, they could move Pettersen, but if they aren't getting his equivalent in a RD, that trade would be a mistake, and of course they don't want to do a 1 for 1 either. If they resign Horvat too, I think eventually they end up trading the younger guys of their core if they keep getting the same results.

I could see those 3 guys get moved whether this or next year depending on their term, when you said additions earlier my mind went to Copp and Perron (thinking that he also had a 3+ year deal and not 2). I think any and all expiring ufa in 1 or 2 years could be dealt with Perron being less likely and Larkin as well. If Larkin leaves I imagine it would be through FA rather than a blockbuster hockey trade or futures.

It's 3 first round picks Hronek and Lindstrom were 2nd rd picks. It is tempting but I agree Wings pass.

Petterson on the wings is so tantalizing, and for that reason I think its absolutely worth it giving up the picks. The first this year or next year most likely at best are players as good as petterson in 5 years, if they ever get to that point, which is by no means guaranteed. In the NBA, draft picks get traded all the time and in large quantities, even though players are more pro-ready out of the draft. NBA GMs simply understand the value of players they are acquiring better, and are less attached to the hope which picks bring. This is a trade Detroit could not loose, more so Vancouver could win with some savvy drafting

The Canes don't need a center. With Teuvo and Pacioretty out, they could actually use some help on the wings right now. However, picking up Horvat with an extension works. Not 8 years because he is 27 and will be 36 when that deal expires. But a 4-5 year deal for 6-7 million? Wouldn't be opposed to that. One of the major complaints about adding Horvat has been that he is a rental. If he doesn't come with an extension, Carolina is unlikely to give up either asset you want for him. But this, I think I'd do depending on trade protection clauses.

It's not even about value, Yzerman has already come out and said 1st round picks are off the table. We are going to be methodical and draft and develop internally.
