Other than Liljgren were not offering Calgary anything of value here. And even if you want to argue that Liljgren has the potential to one day be better than Tanev (the potential is definitely there) there is no guarantee it happens and even if it did, how does that help Calgary now?

If the Leafs want Tanev they would have to overpay and I have to think Robertson and a first are a part of that overpay (with possible Liljgren plus) because Tanev is an important part of that team.

Considering this is next year I don't think it's as bad as you guys make it out to be. Yes they are cup contenders and yes Tanev is a great player but if Kylington is the real deal on the left side, swapping Tanev for Liljgren and more wouldn't be a bad move. You would have a top 6 of Hanifin - Andersson Kylington - Weegar Zadorov/Mackey - Liljegren. Tanev next year will be 33 turning 34 and he has definitely seen alot of miles, still playing great though, but it could catch up to him. You see alot of players drop off significantly when they hit their mid 30s, not all but some. Then you have to consider the cap space side of things. As they sit not they are projected to have 1.7M in cap space with 4 UFAs and 1 RFA to sign. In this scenario they get younger, gain cap space and multiple assets.

Also Tanev is from Toronto so I doubt he has them on his 10 team no trade list.

Ty Voit is supposed to be one of Toronto's better prospects. I do think they should swap the picks for a first rounder though but I don't think the other is as bad as some people think considering it is supposed to be next year when Tanev is 33 turning 34.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tanev, but I would definitely consider this deal

Flames get a Much Younger Replacement Player, Open up $3.1mil in Cap Space + Acquire 4 More Assets/Prospects

Calgary is in a win- now mode, now "win when Lil plays up to his potential"

in two years, Hanifin, Kylington, Backlund, Lindholm, Toffoli and Dube are all up for deals, potentially losing a few, I don't see Lil putting the flames closer to a cup than Tanev does during the next 2 seasons.

This trade is addressing what Toronto needs and not what Calgary would also feel they are benefiting from.

I think you greatly underestimate how effective and important Tanev is. Easy no

Certainly the Leafs aren't giving up all that for one year of Tanev.
Niemela isn't a NHL Dman next season. Minten isn't NHL ready. Bunting doesn't sign for 3m.

Tanev is worth way more to the Flames than he's worth on the open market, he's been talked about as the captain on the off season, Hanifin and Kylington are both as effective as they are due to their time on a pairing with Tanev, he's a defense factory on his own. The value isn't bad in the deal but I just don't think the Flames consider it, way rather see him play next year with a Mackey/Kylington/Poirier to get their games where they need to be. The deal you've proposed in a vacuum is good, Tanev is too important to the Flames though.
