LEAFS MAY HAVE A HIDDEN GEM IN ALEX STEEVES

Description
Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs may have uncovered a hidden gem when they signed Alex Steeves to a three year entry level deal in March 2021 after he was coveted by multiple NHL teams after playing three years in the NCAA for the University of Notre Name.

Hayley Wickenenheiser, Toronto's director of player development commented last year after watching Alex Steeve's in his first pro development camp that he looks like a pro player on the ice.

Alex Steeves wanted to dominate after his first pro development camp when he joined the Toronto Marlies in the AHL last year and was on fire to start his first season with 14 points in his first 13 games and had a great first pro season with 23 goals and 46 points in 58 games.

Kyle Dubas recently commented after the Leafs season that he wouldn't put it past Alex Steeves to have a big offseason and steal an NHL roster this fall.

There is not many flaws in Steeve's game as he is a great skater, has incredible speed and a lethal shot with a lightening release and tremendous accuracy.

Alex Steeves plays 5x5, PP and PK and is an incredible run and gun player and burns opponents when they make mistakes. He also uses his elite speed on the back-check and has a strong hockey IQ which makes him a very valuable two-way player similar to a Mitch Marner.

There is not much to dislike about Alex Steeves as he plays hard, scores goals, great at both ends of the rink, is incredibly consistent and looks ready to claim a roster spot starting on the Leaf's new and superior fourth line this season. He looks like an brilliant signing by Kyle Dubas and a hidden gem for the Toronto Maple Leafs with huge upside.

I think you are 100% correct........but I do think he has more upside in the future......Not easy breaking into the NHL and on a team as powerful as the Leafs.

Sure it is easy to break onto the leafs bottom 6. I mean, how hard would it be to beat out players like Anderson, Clifford, Simmonds, and NAK ? It’s not that hard when there is very little amount of offense in the bottom 6.

But wait… off in the distance Dubie hears a trumpet. He looks out of his window and stares down at Joe Sakic accompanied by the championship Avalanche. The “master of wristers” got word of the legendary prospect Steeves and calls out to Dubass “give me that prospect! In return I will help beyond your wildest dreams!”

The next morning, all of Toronto is awoken to the sound of breaking news. Mack and Makar emerge from ashes of last year’s first round and call out to Toronto “hear us TML fans! We are here to save you, do not be afraid of change.”

Both raise their hands, revealing two rings. A powerful gust of wind blows leaves in the area into a frenzy. The ominous wind stops as Mats Sundin and Felix the Cat appear in the mist.

A single tear drip rolls down Dougie Gilmore’s eye. He stands up and whispers…. “It is time.” He walks out the door as the camera pans over to the table. Upon it is a single note pad with one word written… “Steeves…”

The Leafs don't have true NHL prospects, but IMO Steeves is one.
Leafs are depending on Steeves to make the team, and probably Robertson too. So the Leafs are hoping a LW of Bunting, Steeves, Robertson and Engvall that's less than 4m. With Kefoot likely gone for cap reasons, yea I certainly see Steeves as a Leaf come October. And really he looks to be NHL good.

I hope this post winds up being true. Would be great to see some of our prospects pan out. But we haven’t had much lately. I like what I saw in Hironven and Niemela. However it’s a massive jump to the next level. Both have some size challenges. Hironven to me is more ready than Robertson. Knies isn’t as nhl ready as people think. Needs some AHL time.

Yea, Hiroven and Niemela need North American time in the AHL, to adjust to the ice and get "man strength" ready for the NHL. Leafs fans get so excited about everyone, and you're right, Knies is another one who needs AHL time, though physically he appears to close to NHL ready. Leafs have traded away so many first and second round picks in the past few years, that they have few NHL ready players on ELC contracts which would really help the cap situation.

i swear i'm not just pairing them in my mind because they're both named Alex, but I feel like Steeves could be the player to step up into the Kerfoot role eventually. He doesn't really take faceoffs, so he's not as versatile, but I could easily see him hitting 20 goals/50 points on the 2nd line. Great production for a guy on his ELC, something that Toronto needs at this point.

In his limited time last season I liked Abruzeze. I hope he gets a fair shake this fall.

Yeah, he gets a fair shake, but I wasn't impressed last year. The Marlie centres from last year aren't really NHLers from what they have shown. It's a big third year pro season for some of them.

Do you understand that Kampf, Engval, Jarnkrok, Abue Kubel, Kerfoot, Robertson and Gaudette are part of the bottom 6 which is an outstanding group of players.

Your description of his skating and skills is quite fantastical, to be polite. If he is so supernaturally gifted, why is he on the 4th line?

You might want to read the comments about Alex Steeves from Palhal on this post who is probably one of the most knowledgable viewers on CapFriendly with his 15,662 likes if you think my despcription is all fantastical.........He is going to be starting on the fourth line because that it where a good young player should be starting.

Bunting actually played some fourth line shifts last year on the Leafs........until Keefe continued to elevate him up the roster and finally to the first line with Matthews and Marner because he earned his ice time like Steeves is going to do as well.
