I'm not an AVS fan, but I took the time to actually look at their team page and saw that Eric Johnson's contract comes off next year. Mac probably gets around a $4/$4.5M raise, which still leaves money left over from Johnson's cap coming off the books.

Don't see Buffalo trading a 1st and a 2nd for a player who doesn't really fit a positional need. Not a bad player, but the Sabres have internal options that cost nothing. They need top line talent, they are already full of middle 6 guys.

avs do not need to "Dump" someone to sign mackinnon, and if they do trade girard they are getting a lot of good value back, you are treating him like hes a negative asset in this trade, which is far from the truth

I really don't know what kind of numbers they'll be looking at, but other players are coming off next year as well and plus the cup is likely to up by another $1M. They may have to do some shifting, but it doesn't look like any drastic measures will have to be taken.

Except Johnson's contract goes towards Mac and is a net-zero effect the cap as it is now, the cap will go up, so you in essence of the same money to spend. As I said previously they may have to make a small move or two, but nothing like moving a major player.

I did look. 26 million to sign 11 players and Mackinnon, byram and newhook will cost between 15-22 million themselves, leaving 4-11 million to sign 8 players.

Again again again, I didn't say they won't have to make a move or two, but nothing drastic. They're entering official contender territory where they'll have to be bargain hunters. Find their Heinens, Perrys, Bogos, etc... They have some young players who may challenge for the bottoms spots. I'm not claiming to know, but it's clear they don't necessarily have to move someone on the level of Girard.

Ok sake of argument, Avs have 26.5M in cap space next off season. And let’s say they give MacK $13M x 8. So that’s $14.5M cap space. And yes Newhook and Byram are RFA’s so they don’t have any real leverage and the Avs would theoretically only have to give them QO’s, but for the sake of it they give Byram a 2x$4M which gets him to arbitration and Newhook a 2x$3.5M which does the same. That leaves them with $7M to sign bottom 6 and 6th dman. Olausson takes one of those spots so a little over $6M. MacDonald or Behrens can be slotted into the 6th or 7th spot so that’s another spot filled leaving over $5M for the remaining bottom 5 spots. How hard will it be for COL to fill those with guys like Kaut, Maltsev, Bowers, Foudy, Meyers, or UFA’s looking to hunt for a cup on a championship caliber team? TBL has been doing the exact thing the last 3 or 4 years. Now the next off season might get interesting with Toews being eligible for an extension but they don’t have to move Girard at all and they sure aren’t dumping him. COL knows they are going to have to go on the cheap in the bottom 6 but really is that an issue.
