As much as I love Ovechnikov, you're out of your mind if you think Carolina is trading Staal, retaining half his deal, and eating that Muzzin contract. If you want Staal, fine. Full 6 million or get a different team to retain, and keep Muzzin. And it'll cost you more than that for the Canes captain and premier shutdown forward. You could probably throw in a 2nd and someone like SDA. Staal would also have to waive his NMC

In order for a trade to be plausible, it needs to make sense for both teams involved. Similar to the Leafs, the Canucks are tight on cap space, and what your suggesting here is:

Salary coming in:
Kerfoot - $3.5M
Holl - $2M
Engvall - Probably $2M
Back up goalie good enough to match Martin's skills - $1.5M
Total - $9M

Salary going out:
Travis Dermott - $1.5M (similar skillset to Holl, but 5 years younger and an RFA next year)
Spencer Martin - $762,500
Total - $2,262,500

Essentially, for $6,737,500, the Canucks are getting two 'slightly better than average' 3rd line players. In order to compete, your 3rd liners need to cost you <$2.5M.

It's for this reason, that the Canucks are out.

Lmao at that Sabres trade. Tavares is a cap dump at this point his contract is as bad as Skinner's. So you're basically offering a late 1st for Tage Thompson. And then on top of that, you decided the sabres should add more picks

John is bit over paid at $11,000,000 but he is far from a cap dump.
During his four years with the Leafs he has 274 pts and 119 goals in 280 games.
To put this into perspective Jack Eichel at $10,000,000 per year over the past 4 years has played 200 games has 80 goals and 203 pts, no one is calling him a cap dump.
Over the past four years only 15 players have more goals and 22 have more pts.
TBH I could only dream of John Tavares setting up Jeff Skinner or Victor Olofsson for the next three years.
I think it would be easy to imagine Skinner returning to 40 goals per year.
Drop the picks going to the Leafs and unlike the other Sabre contributors, I would make this trade.

EDIT: One more first round dart for Crowe to throw at the draft board.
Four picks among the to 28 would be a dream of any rebuilding team.

You know what else would be a dream for any rebuilding team? 11 mil in cap space and a 24 year old giant who scored near a PPG.

I like JT, I think JT is still very good, but he's not the franchise player he once was and he is probably going to continue to decline. Thompson and JT had a similar production this year, and Thompson played with worse players.

Everything you said about JT and his last 4 years is 100% accurate, and if you were getting JT's last 4 years (27-31 years) I'd agree.. But you're not. You're getting his 31-35 years, and I just don't know why you'd trade Tage Thompson's future for John Tavares' future.

You are correct and I may be in error.
Check out who were John's line mates:
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/toronto-maple-leafs/line-combinations/ Mikheyev and Kerfoot.
No one would mistake them for Skinner or Tuch.
Let me add one more reason why I make this trade, John wins 60% of his FO.

I believe dailyfaceoff.com shows the most recent lines, not the most common. I think they played that way in the playoffs, but not in the regular season.

https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playerreport.php?fromseason=20212022&thruseason=20212022&stype=2&sit=ev&stdoi=oi&rate=n&v=t&playerid=8475166

If you sort that one on TOI With, it shows the amount of even strength minutes JT played with all other maple leafs in the regular season. Nylander and Kerfoot are his most common linemates, and I think that pair overall is probably slightly better than Tuch/Skinner.

And JT definitely does have elite faceoff capabilities, which Thompson doesn't have (at least not yet?) I think JT was a little better this season than Thompson was, I just don't think that'll last much longer so it's probably better to keep Thompson for when the Sabres are ready to compete in 2-3 years.

LOL! YES, I used the website that would produce the information that I wanted.
On the other hand, if you want to see the Tavares effect, plug in Kerfoot this year and last year.
Last year was a huge disappointment for Kerfoot 23 pts in 56 games, this year his stats are very good 51 pts in 82 games.

We all have our POV and you have provided very compelling reasons for not making the trade, which I completely agree.
I think JT would be a difference maker for Skinner and Tuch and give the Sabres a true top center.
I would hate to give up Tage as I have been his biggest supporter stating numerous times big players take longer to develop.

IMO JT would be better than TT next year and probably throughout his contract, but Sabres also get one more first round pick.
When he was first traded to Buffalo in 2018-2019 Skinner had 28 goals in his first 41 games.
Then the wheel fell off, and he had only 12 more over the last 41 games.
IMO with JT at center we may see that same 50 goal season from Jeff.

BTW the Sabres also have another first round pick, LOL.
