The only bad thing about the Schmidt trade proposal is his NTC. The value is there, but would he waive for Detroit?

Martinez, Schmidt or Petterson could most certainly happen... I think Martinez is the most likely of the 3 due to his Michigan ties, personally...

Disagree. I don't think I have seen a single trade on here that actually happened in Detroit. Yzerman thinks differently then all of the AGMs here.

I would be very surprised if Yzerman brings in Schmidt, who will be going into his age 31 season and has a cap hit of nearly $6 million for three more years. Left D is an issue, at least short term, but they've invested so much draft capital on that position I don't think they acquire anyone a on a deal longer than two years unless it's a guy like Pettersson who is younger and has a more movable contract when the prospects are ready. Edvinsson, in all likelihood, will be on the roster next year. Johansson has a chance to make the club sooner rather than later, and they have a good number of other LHD draftees that they think highly of in Wallinder, Buium, Viro, Sebrango, and McIsaac.

I think you could say the same thing about 99.99% of all trades for all teams on here.

Well, that's 99% of this site, it's what this site IS.

To date, Detroit hasn't been targeting any big name or big money players, so under the radar moves were naturally a better fit. Detroit is now about to turn a corner and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Yzerman bring in a more expensive player, especially on LHD with how thin the FA crop is and how many teams are looking to shed cap. Martinez and Pettersson could both be had for less than they normally would and would fill a role very well here. Personally, Schmidt is low on my depth chart, so I'll leave him out of the conversation in this case.

Now, with all that said, I would not rule out Yzerman making a major splash and bringing in a stud LHD in a blockbuster and then obviously this all becomes moot, but I think Martinez or Pettersson are probably the most realistic options that have been presented on this board, to date.

I don't see any problem with getting Schmidt. Detroit has two big problems on their left side, they need someone to play 2nd pair with Hronek and help him out defensively (Marcus Pettersson fits perfectly here) and they need someone that can QB the 2nd PP and play top line with Seider and mentor him. Schmidt is one of several guys that would fit that job.

I see it as much more likely that Yzerman gets Schmidt (or one of the other options) to do that job than that he puts Edvinsson on the top line fresh out of camp after no experience at all playing on the smaller NHL sized ice.

Schmidt is still young enough that he can be traded after one or two years without problems. Detroit's ability to retain salary as well as the fact that the cap is starting to increase again helps enough that we shouldn't have any problem getting more back than we paid for him.

Schmidt has one advantage over other options, like Martinez or Scandella, and that is that he plays both sides. In case of injury to Seider or Hronek that could be very valuable.

Adding a ld or moving an underperforming winger could very well happen. I mean leddy just happened last season and berggren could step into zadina hole easy.

Yzerman would never consider overpaying for a high ptofile veteran LD or wait Ryan McDonagh comes to mind

well the point of this site is to make trades that probably wont happen, maybe you are on the wrong site?

also if yzerman traded for leddy, i could see him going for a few of the guys. i definitly dont see a petry trade though, age doesnt match the need for detroit.

Not saying they could never happen. Just saying I am sick of seeing them in every other AGM and that they are unlikely to happen. Lets see some creativity here with the trades.

Your right. Not a chance any of these are happening. Every trade is an overpay or doest make sense. One of the players might be traded to Detroit under different circumstances but that's about it. Zadina will net a decent return if traded. He deserves a legitimate chance with the new coach.

I get what you're saying, and they will address the left side one way or another, I just would be surprised if he goes the route of taking on a 31 year old with three years and $18 million left on his contract coming off a mediocre season. I could absolutely be wrong.

A lot of people in here think that they know everything. Some, I think, believe that they work in the front office with Stevie Y.

Well, Schmidt isn't any older than Leddy and one of the criteria is veteran leadership and mentorship for Seider, age and experience is an advantage here. The cap isn't a problem for Detroit and it's also the reason that Schmidt is available as cheap as he is.

Schmidt is also a better player defensively than Martinez who is one of the other options and he has good numbers with shot blocking being top 2-3 in Detroit and takeaways comparable to Seider, he's not a big hitter but that isn't needed if paired with Seider. His points this year was 32 which is the second highest in his career so I don't really get that "mediocre season" reasoning.

As you say the left side will be fixed one way or other but at least one veteran will be there with Hronek being 24 years old and Seider 21 and Lindström 23 and Walman 26 and perhaps Pettersson 25. Carrying one 31 year old defender for two years before trading him (for a profit) seems positively sensible to me whether that is Schmidt or Martinez or Scandella is up in the air. My preference is Schmidt out of those three.
