The C. White buyout costs Ottawa about $1M less than Monahan does for a year. Ottawa ends up saving a bit of cash in this deal while avoiding dead cap. How much does Calgary need to add to make this trade go through?

There is reported a lot of interest in Monahan, almost no reason to do this trade just for the sake of a buyout. Also Flames don't add

No thanks. Monahan isn't a top 3 C in Ottawa next year with Norris, Stützle and Pinto, and he's not close to good enough as a top 6 W addition. White is movable with a little salary retention and has a very manageable buy out if not, and Del Zotto is a totally acceptable 7th D for Ottawa next year.

White has actually been good lately. If he was at 3 mill flat, I’d keep him

Don't get me wrong I love White, but unless Ottawa's planning on moving Pinto for some reason, there's just not a place for him. Kastelic is such a natural fit as the 4C too.

It seems like he has fallen out of favour though, is this true? I wonder what his value would be?

Ottawa isn't buying out White. Buyouts are an extreme solution, and paying White $5.25MM to go away is just silly considering the Sens don't want to pay Zaitsev his $2MM signing bonus, which is basically just a portion of his pay, in a lump sum. They don 't want to pay lump sums, and aren't going to pay a guy to just go away. They bought out Ryan because he was done, as evidenced by his 33 games after the buyout, and then out of hockey. Phaneuf was retained salary that the LA Kings turned into a buyout.

White might be traded, but he also could stay and Brown traded. There isn't room for all three of Pinto, White, and Brown since Joseph was acquired. Brown had a hot streak of 15 goals in 21 games to end last season, but before that he had 7 goals is 36 games, and since then, 10 goals in 56 games.

36 games, 7G, (16 goal per 82 games rate)
21 games, 15G, (59 goal per 82 games rate)
56 games, 10G, (15 goal per 82 games rate)

Brown has his strengths, but scoring goals was a short term hot streak.

I've had some fun with that hot streak, quoting numbers is various groupings, but at the end of the day, it was a hot streak with an unsustainable 27.8% shooting percentage.

So expect one of White or Brown traded, but don't expect a buyout.

As @Claesson4Norris already stated, there's no room for Monahan with Norris, Stützle, and Pinto in Ottawa. White can at least play the wing, is a right hand shot, and is a major glue guy, not to be moved just for moving sake.

9 points in 20 games is pretty decent considering the league is in mid season form, and White is just returning from an injury. He's also 50% on faceoffs, winning 70 of 140 faceoffs so far since his return.

Formenton and Brown make more sense on the 3rd line, but White is stuck there until Pinto returns.

Tkachuk Norris Batherson
Joseph Stützle White
Formenton Pinto Brown
Kelly Kastelic Watson

Barring trades, this is the probably lineup next season

Yeah, unfortunately White will be pushed down to the 4th line eventually and I really want to see a Kelly-Kastelic-Watson line in action.

I've been a Kelly Guy since before he signed his contract out of camp, but right now Kastelic is the only one of those three that I'm 100% sold on being 4th line opening night. I like Kelly's game, but he really hasn't played his game at the NHL level. Mostly he's just existed. Gonna need to take a step forward in his tenacity next year, or he's gonna get blown past by Crookshank next year (watch out for Crookshank btw). Watson is fine, but I'm hoping someone (Sokolov? Idk) shows up to push him to 13th forward.

I think the only way Watson stays long-term is if he becomes a Boro-type player. Someone who is a "goon" but can also play and is great in the locker room and with the fans. Because right now he does not have the skill level necessary to be an NHL player and I say this as a massive Watson fan.

The problem is that Watson is a super limited player, and he's not really a notably good fighter. Considering that's supposed to be his thing, he doesn't fight often and he wins even less often. Seems like he's good in the room, so I'm fine with him as an extra forward, but they really ought to be aiming higher for who should be in as a regular. Look at a guy like Deslauriers for example, who can throw em as well or better and at least boasts a notably positive defensive impact.

How does Monahan look on LW? Because that's where he'd play

If he's been good there in the past, I wouldn't mind this reclamation project but it's for being a center, then I'm not doing that
