Description
Montreal was the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention in 2022 yaaaaayyyy now let the fast track rebuild commence LOL. Here's my, what everyone here would call, NHL22 level of trolling in thinking of off-season scenarios. I don't care lets goo!!!! 😂 so on a serious note addressing the elephant in the room, I would expect to see Carey Price dressed for opening night. its gonna be well over a year since he last played and recovered from his physical injuries, and it seems he's gotten the help he's needed with his personal life and possible mental health issues in that time as well which is amazing to hear and warms my heart truly. Now lets really get into it:

what it seems they need from an outside perspective is at least 1 defenceman and 1 forward to be able to kickstart the two groups. lets not forget I mean for the most part this is still the same team that came back from being down 3 games to 1 against the Leafs and went all the way to the cup final vs Tampa just a year ago, so what I think they could really benefit from is having some really talented veteran presence. How to acquire them? well first, they need cap, meaning dump the decent player but bad contract type of guys. Petry and Edmundson are the first to come to mind, and they were both in discussions at the deadline already, particularly Petry. And Petry will especially be difficult to trade since his NTC covers 15 teams, but, and even though Detroit has right side talent for their top 4 already, a retained Petry might work well for them as a 6th or 7th option, and there's always the chance to introduce a 3rd team to retain another 25% of his salary. the return for them has to strictly be picks and for their talent and cap hit I can see no earlier than 3rd/4th rounders.

The Kane deal is awful for Chicago though, while the Petry deal is awful for Montréal. I wouldn't risk trading a 2023 unprotected 1st for Chychrun

Ottawa says NO to both those offers. It might be hard to hear the NO through all the laughter, but it's for sure a no.

Also doesn't have great character and has really had enough time to reconcile which may inhibit him in the future. Look at DeAngelo, he may be really good but Carolina is the only place where character issues don't matter.

He did a horrible, horrible thing. I am biased as a Habs fan sure. But, I am willing to give him a chance to prove that he is better than that and has something to offer off the ice. If he slips up and does something stupid - cut him loose. But I did a lot of stupid stuff when I was 17 and people have given me chances to prove myself, so I am willing to give him one personally.

Yep, I think we all are, he just has to show compasion, respect, and earn everybody's respect again including the person he harmed. He was a teenager but he was also a top athlete and I think we look at prospects and young players as men that should automatically be NHLers and do NHL things.

I agree I don't see Petry coming to Detroit. Let's say Petry was a center or a LHD would you give up more for the retention with the amount of cap space Detroit has or would you rather take more salary and not give up more assets?

laugh laugh If Klingberg were willing to take $6,000,000 x 5 years he'd already be resigned back with Dallas. Minimally Klingberg wants $8,000,000 x 8 years.

And FYI Detroit passes on Petry, Yzerman basically said that he no longer has any interest in him at what Hughes is asking.

He said the asking price was too high on Chychrun and he felt that Petry was just too old for the core he wanted

Yeah IIRC it was Kevin Allen who said Yzerman was looking for 2 defensemen in their prime. That was before the trade deadline. I don't know if acquiring Walman fills one of those voids or not. Of course he also claimed Juolevi off waivers.

I think this coming summer he'll ask about Marcus Pettersson and Nate Schmidt. Walman fills one of the 2 spots he wants assuming Edvinsson makes it out of camp.

I wouldn't want Petry regardless of what his position were to be. His age and contract (both length and how it's structured) disqualifies him. Detroit is past the cap dump era.

Wings decline. Detroit had negative interest in Petry. Habs would need to add a time machine and prime Carey Price with 50% retention for Detroit to trade for Petry.

0 chance MTL trades 2023 pick unprotected absolutely 0.
Edmonson is a top 4 shutdown beast NO chance in hell they trade him for a 3rd rounder.
DET is young and rebuilding, don't think they trade for Petry.
Lmao at that CHI trade, I love Gallagher but that package for Kane is horrendous.

I would do this

Easy no for Byron though
