Imagine that pick ends up 1st or 2nd next year. I don’t think the Sens are trading a pick that isn’t top 2 protected in 2023

Sens could get a fiala deal done without trading their first. I also like the idea of Dumba to the sens

I think our 1sts should be untouchable until we’re a consistent playoff team (2024 is the earliest 1st that I would think should be in play, as long as the team has made the playoffs twice by then). We can probably get Fiala without it too. Pieces like Greig, our 2nd, and Brannstrom could be added, which should be helpful for the Wild (cheap, young players with upside that can be solid contributors over the next few seasons of cap hell).

If that pick ends up a 1st or 2nd in 2023, this team is in trouble, and please no Ranger comments.

Even if the pick ends up being just outside the lottery... thats a really tough pill to swallow. Anything from 3-7 would be ROUGH.

Sens have a very deep prospect pool they have the pieces to get fiala without giving up a first. Also the market for Fiala wont be that big because he wants alot of money and this years free agency class is loaded with wingers

Minnesota is keeping dumba. Then has Calen addison, Ryan o'Rourke, Carson lambos, damon hunt, jack peart who Minnesota will likely sign after his season, etc.. all of this to say Erik brannstom doesn't do anything for Minnesota as we are stacked at d. Plenty of teams will offer a 1st and prospect for fiala for fiala easily.

Well other teams will offer a 1st. Plenty of teams will make room for players like fiala. If Minnesota won't get a 1st, then can manage to keep fiala for 1 year , and or trade him during deadline. Minnesota isn't going to just accept whatever for fiala.

We could probably get away if we traded Greig. But hard to see Dorion trading him

That's what I was thinking... maybe it's how the OP worded it?

"if Ottawa wins a lottery pick, then the 2023 1st round pick is exchanged instead"

I mean, our pick is 5th OA at the moment... we got Sanderson at that spot in 2020... That's a really HUGE pill to swallow. Fiala is 8 years older than this prospect and will be expensive RIGHT AWAY vs a guy who will be 3 years on ELC.

Not all 1sts have the same value... very important to understand that.

How many Colorado/Tampa's first would you need to move up and get Ottawa's current 5th OA pick?

A better wording would in point of fact be to make it top 7 protected. That's more than fair. I think. If that pick is in the 7-12 range, then it becomes less of an issue. But if it's 7th or higher, that's where the Sens need to draw the line.

Even as a Wild fan, I'd agree that it shouldn't be moved if it's higher than 7th ova.

That's the rub. It's a draft day trade at that point.

Honestly, it'd be up to the Sens. They probably hold onto it until whomever is picking 6th is done and depending if the player that they want is still there or not. If they are, they likely use it on their guy. If not, then the scenario opens up that they are willing to move it for Fiala.

I could agree to that but makes me nervous still... I mean, look at this (this was Bob McKenzie's Mid-Season Draft Rankings) :

1 Shane Wright Kingston (OHL)
2 Logan Cooley USA U-18 (USHL)
3 Joakim Kemell JYP (SM Liiga)
4 Matt Savoie Winnipeg (WHL)
5 Juraj Slafkovsky TPS (SM Liiga Jr.)
6 Ivan Miroshnichenko Omsk (VHL)
7 David Jiricek Plzen (CZE)
8 Danila Yurov Magnitogorsk (MHL)
9 Simon Nemec Nitra (SVK)
10 Conor Geekie Winnipeg (WHL)
11 Brad Lambert Lahti (SM Liiga)
12 Jonathan Lakkerimaki Djurgardens (SWE J-20)
13 Cutter Gauthier USA U-18 (USHL)
14 Frank Nazar USA U-18 (USHL)
etc

Look at the guys still available at #9 to #12

We don't know how it'll play out but it looks to be quite similar to 2020 top-15

Well, two things are certain.

1) Miroshnichenko and Yurov are going to drop like a rock in the projected rankings because of the NHL cutting ties with the KHL. They likely won't be picked until the 2nd round now because of that and what's going on in Ukraine right now.

2) Outside of maybe Nemec and Lambert there's not going to be a player who's ceiling will be higher than what Fiala's is. Which is to say an elite top-line playmaking winger with gamebreaking talent.

Geekie and Lakkerimaki are presently considered to top out as 2nd line players. Gauthier and Nazar, middle-sixers.

To be blunt, Fiala is frankly better than anyone or anything you could draft in that range and the Sens can afford him.

1) I wish I wouldn't have to acknowledge this FFS. The thing is we talk about how it affects the Ukrainians, but this will affect a lot of Russians too. I feel bad for them too

2) I know, outside of a few choices at the top, most players who will be better than Fiala (might not be many) will probably be outside the top-15 anyway. But as a team you (should) have confidence in your scouting and think you can make the "steal" of the first round. That's where this point become important : The thing is Fiala is 8 years older than these prospects and will be expensive RIGHT AWAY vs a guy who will be 3 years on ELC.

All that said, I'm very close to say "let's go". Only top-3 protected brings back Duchene memories (2019's pick ended up 4th OA but could have been 1st), top-7 protected makes it more "manageable" lol

I just tagged the three people involved in this conversation, ignore which specific comment I tagged.

I meant top3 protected. I think Fiala is as good as any 4OA-6OA picked player, and Fiala fits this teams timeline. There's a lot less risk involved with Fiala over a future 4OA-6OA pick, IMO. If you don't agree that's fine, that's why we do this, to exchange our points of view.

I appreciate all the comments BTW.
