I think Calgary will get either Toffoli and/or Lehkonen from MTL. But I don't see them parting from Monahan to do it. I do think Monahan to MTL is an interesting concept though. Suzuki, Monahan, Dvorak would be a decent C group. I really don't think Calgary should trade Monahan. They still can make the cap work for Toffoli

Ya the habs wouldnt be interested in that return. Pitlick is worthless so we can move on from that.

Monahan does not hold a lot of value to the habs. He is 28 at the start of next year and a UFA after next season. If he was making closer to 4 and it was easier to flip him it would be one thing but the habs would have to eat several millions to get value out of him.

If they were to trade toffoli it would need more than 1 futures piece.

Not even close.

Pelletier is the only piece of value to Montreal and that's only IF he can handle C at the NHL level as an undersized player on a roster that already projects to feature two undersized players in the top 6 for the foreseeable future (or up to 4-5 in the top 9 from existing prospects/players).

If you assume Montreal is retaining 50% on Monahan and flipping him for at least a 2nd, perhaps it's closer. Have to remove all the picks coming from Montreal to start with.

just because you have concerns for the prospect in the trade doesn't mean it isn't close. Pelletier is a high end prospect and you're getting a Tatar esque player where maybe he could play really well for you next season and you flip him at the deadline for something solid. Toffoli is good but he's not elite. A top prospect like Pelletier and maybe a second is what your getting. it is a very good value trade for the Habs but you could go target another prospect if you like

It isn't close as proposed. You have Montreal taking a player that has little to no value to them (Monahan) and adds cap, while giving up two 3rds and a 4th. Pitlick doesn't impact the value at all. This is Toffoli plus picks for Pelletier.

Tatar was a tool for cap mitigation where he luckily rebounded. That's best case for Monahan and not a likely outcome.

When you say Pelletier and a 2nd that's what I said. It involves the extra step of retaining and flipping Monahan to make that happen however. That's closer.

Calgary taking care of Monahan separately, or a 3-way where he just passes through (basically a guarantee we will indeed get a 2nd from another team), is what I see as reasonable.

I still don't consider Pelletier an attractive target, but I already conceded that he's a piece of value in my first sentence.

wondering why you don't like Pelletier, he's a point per game player in the ahl with some pretty good skill, I believe its because he's slightly undersized? I tend to like bigger players but if we got Pelletier I wouldn't be upset

as for Monahan, he had 5 very good seasons in a row for Calgary and is only 3 seasons removed from 20 goals. To me getting him and playing him in the top 6 hoping he finds some chemistry and bounces back is much more valuable than a 2nd. If at the deadline he's on pace for 20 goals you could easily get a second for him and if he doing better you could get a first.

You are going to be very very sad after real trades are actually made.

Interesting Comments all around, I love Mony and had big time guilt hitting the button, BUT he's a great player coming off a serious injury/operation and maybe a new scenery might rejuvenate him like it did for Sam Bennett. Pelletier is the odd man out in Calgary with Gaudreau and Mangiapani as the insitu Jockeys, Pitlick is to drop cap and for Montreal who have 20Mil in IR shouldn't be a problem

It's a matter of production translating to the NHL level and that being more difficult when you can't bring your skills to bear against longer reaches and bigger bodies. Then fit is a factor as well. It magnifies the size issue when a significant portion of your roster or talent pool all have the same challenges.

Even IF Monahan was able to perform better in a worse situation, he's gone next year. It would be a mistake to re-sign him even if he did perform well, because we would be basing that on one season. A guaranteed 2nd is better than a possible 1st, because the risk of his value lowering is too high.

Doubt it. It's more likely that we keep Toffoli than trade him for less. I might not agree with who we get back, but the value will be there in a trade and the value in keeping him is fine as well.
