anything that involve hughes is will also involve smith, you are going to overpay for hughes no matter what as he cant be offersheeted. or alternate, you can wait probably another seven or eight years when he turns 30 lol

Leafs dont stand a chance of making a 4 mil Subban cap hit work this season. That would be out of the range of the Alex Kerfoots and require even a better defenseman to be moved or one of the big 4 forwards.

Waiting out the process doesn't mean a deal won't get done. Look at how many RFAs who waited out the season in years past and got traded because of the holdup. Only cases like Roslovic, where the player boycotted the organization, did a move happen. There's been no indication that 40 or 43 don't want to play here.

I also think Quinn's deal is done (8-8.25 x 8 range) but is in a holding pattern until Pettersson is finished. If we sign Hughes officially, it opens up easy pickings for an offersheet. That's not a wise move at all. No more wise than making a rash and pointless trade like the one in this deal.

If Hughes ends up with 1-year contract extension (which doesn’t sound likely) then maybe we can start speculating about a move next year. Until then, this is all just fun and games.
