IMO, the one thing that will save the Buffalo Sabres is for new ownership to take charge.
Once the Sabres miss the playoffs this year, they will be tied for first for having the longest playoff drought in league history, along with the Edmonton Oilers from 2006-2017.
The entire tenure of Terry Pegula and his wife, Kim, as joint owners of the Buffalo Sabres has very closely coincided with this playoff drought.
Since Pegulas bought the Sabres in 2010, they have had:
Complete turnover of their roster
Complete turnover of their coaching staff.
Complete turnover of their management team/front office
Complete turnover of their scouting staff
Complete turnover of hockey operations/team executives aside from the Pegulas themselves.
The only thing that hasn't changed since 2010 is the two people at the very top
However, to get a new owner, you'll need a billionaire, a businessman/woman who likes hockey and someone with some sort of connection or interest/stake in the community.
And you also need the Pegulas to sell the Sabres and give up a piece of their monopoly over all the major/local sports teams in the Western part of New York State.
That's a tall order :/
Successful teams are built starting from the top, not from the bottom
