Contracts matter. So, it really is a heck of a lot closer than you think. The two of them combined are the same cap hit.

McDavid is special no doubt. Best player in the league. He isn't a particularly good center. He is fine, but he isn't in the same conversation when it comes to his FO and defensive game as say Coutrourier, Barkov, Bergeron or Kopitar. Those things also matter. He isn't Bad, he just isn't special in that area.

Connor McDavid has been in the league for 5 years. He has played in 17 playoff games over two seasons. He makes the playoffs 40% of the time.

McDavid is not more valuable than Pasternak and Marchand combined. They are both on absolute steals of contracts too. Marchand and pasta are 2/3rds of the best line in hockey.

If McDavid is worth 10 wins, pasta and Marchand are worth like 7 each.

Pasta/Marchand = $12.8 million (198pt per 82 over the last 3 years)
McDavid = $12.5 million (117pt per 82 over the last 3 years)

While McDavid is the best player in the world, you're using essentially the same cap space for less production

I'm not going to try and argue every point you have tried to make. But they say the team getting the best player wins the trade. Also, those combined points, how many of those goals did both players receive a point? McDavids points alone probably add up to every goal individually, I hope that makes sense? Also I don't care who you are and what you say Marchand is is pretty close to getting over that hill, how many years of elite play does he have left? Pasta obviously more, but not nearly as much as McDavid through his prime. The Bruins get the younger generational talent for more years then the production of the guys they get back. Those picks compensate for that. Both teams get worse but Boston will outright win that trade after a season or two. You don't trade generational players.
