So let’s take a deeper pick ignoring 20/20 hindsight.
Boston was going to take a wing and a d man for sure with those picks.
Wing - Debrusk. Top wings on the board Conner, Boesser, Koneckny, Debrusk, the other Svechnikov, Paul Biitner. The difference between them was marginal. It comes down to preference. They liked Debrusk’s speed. There are a couple of fails there. Botson got a solid contributor that has averaged 25 goals per 82.
D - Zboril. Top d men on the board. Chabot, Zboril, Gabriel Carlsson, Jeremy Roy, Brandon Carlo, Jacob Larsson, Noah Juulsen, Kylington. Chabot was an offensive d man with serious defensive deficiencies. Zboril was ranked evenly with him, teammate, polar opposite, a shutdown d with minimal offense. They had Krug, Zboril seemed a better fit. He’s been buried behind Chara, Krug, Grizz. What do you want? Bench one for him? If he can’t get into the lineup and perform this year then we can call him a bust.
3 - well 🤷🏻♂️ With Bergy and Krejci in their prime center was not a priority. Barzal had question marks, health, goal scoring potential. They had 3 picks in the top half of round 2. They could wait on C. They need more wing depth. Here is where they went off the board. And it failed. Seny was rated mid 2nd to mid 3rd. They could have stayed on board and taken Evgeny Svechnikov and failed too. Not an excuse but draft is not an exact science.
For the record i wanted Barzal, Boeeser, Conner there after the top D were off the board and i said it on draft day. Was not happy then, still not. But it is what is is.
