I don’t see a way to make that oilers trade plausible from an oilers perspective. Even if interested which would be questionable at best the money and term would be extremely challenging. Conversation would have to start based around Neal and Chiasson just for financial reasons at which point I don’t see either side would see enough value in to bother doing.

Detroit passes. 2 knee surgeries in less than a year. One in January and the 2nd in May both times removing cartilage--player will never be the same. The 2nd surgery was because he hit a rehab wall and wasn't recovering to playing condition. That limits his options going forward and increases the likelihood of re-injury. Gostisbehere is also Philly's 7th d-man because of those. You are overpricing him based on what he was pre-knee surgeries not post-surgeries.

The second cleanout was on the other knee and was due to overcompensating when rushing back. He was skating like his old self after the return to play and was one of the more dynamic players on the ice, but hockey guy reasons kept us from icing our best roster. (Charlie O'Connor wrote an entire article about the coaching decisions on the Athletic.) From my perspective, Ghost looked like he's back and I'd prefer to keep him with prov-sanhiem, Ghost-myers, hagg (or any LD)-nisky pairings to start next season.

Agree from the Oilers cap, but this would be dependent on them making another move to cut cap elsewhere. Philly is giving up the better player, but with term and JVR for a 45-55pt player is 1-1.5mil overpaid, but hed be golden on Macdavid wing. JVR still got his pts in just 14 minutes a night this year, PHI is loaded at LW and needs cap space, so theyre not going to take a cap dump back. Getting a big guy with mitt dropping ability is costly for a guy making 3.2mil on the 4th line for 4 more years.

But Oil would have to make another deal somewhere else.

Yes a very late 2nd and very late 3rd for a guy whos signed reasonably for 3 more years and is just 2 seasons removed from 65 pts is not a hefty price. As outlined above, Ghosts injuries have cleared up, but in PHI system with sanheim and provorov above him at LD, and those 2 and niskanen and myers are being puck rushers, the need for a more stay at home/crease clearer in Hagg was more acute than Ghosts upside).
Ghost has 4 seasons of 35+ pts and a season of 65, this year was the oddity. not the norm. Theres few better #3/puck rushers at Ghosts age and salary available.

I get your point but Edmonton’s not taking on cap there are looking to get younger and faster and JVR doesn’t fit that need. Edmonton declines.

Wings still pass, not giving up any seconds in any of the next few drafts unless we are getting something that is ridiculous for our rebuild. You can keep ghost for that price

But is it worth Edmonton to shed space elsewhere to fill it with an another overpaid player? Already have Neal in the same position. Start stacking questionable contracts on top of contracts like mcdavid and Leon’s will make resigning guys threw the flat cap nearly impossible and would cause a constant subtraction. I’m not trying to devalue or suggest he’s a bad player but would very much question him being worth the subtractions it would cause over time.

I'm not sure anyone will give up a 2nd for Gostisbehere.

It’s a high risk, high reward trade. I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a flyer out on him... with the cap sitting where it is, it’s going to be a buyers market, so changing it to two 3rds may be able to get a deal done.
