Description
Just messing around and playing with the numbers. I saw a post about Pius Suter signing and threw him into the mix with an identical contract to Kubalik. If not, Buyout Steen and there is enough cap to resign Steen to a $900,000-$1,500,000 deal. Honestly, you could do both and send De la Rose to the minors (I put DLR in LTIR so he doesn't affect the cap). For the Bozak deal, Carolina could be a good spot for him, I know they got 3 C right now with Aho, Staal, and Trochek but maybe Carolina moves Staal. Either way, Bozak could be good for a prospect that needs more time to develop and a late draft pick no matter what team he is traded to. I think Winnipeg, Montreal, Columbus could all be good spots and these teams are somewhat of contenders too. Allen could go anywhere that wants him for a middle draft pick, I just put Detroit cause who knows what will happen with Jimmy Howard. The same goes for Gunnarsson for a middle pick.

As for the future, I think Justin Faulk will be drafted by Seattle, he won't be protected. That gives $25.5 M and Schwartz, Binner get a $6-7.5M cap hit each leaving at least $10.5 M for 6 FA. Kyrou will get a 900K, Thomas and Sanford will get around 3M, barb will get around 2M, steen could resign for $800K and depending on what these other contracts are resign Suter/bring up Kostin and sign/bring up a RD.

You're not getting assets in return for a cap dump.
Whether Allen is included within that umbrella is debatable, but if he's still on the books you're not able to make the moves you want to make. GMs know this.

The flames did it with michael stone, they bought him out in the pre-FA window IIRC and took the BO and new contract cap hit and the NHL said it was ok

I'm aware of how he did. Clearly wasn't good enough for the starting job in STL eh? As I say, reasonable goalie, but if you keep him, you're having to dump someone else to be cap compliant. He is brought up frequently enough that he can't be worth that much to STL or people would be arguing to keep him.

Ahh gotcha, was thinking of the compliance buyouts a few year ago. I think it was they couldn’t sign back with the team for a year if I recall correctly.

The thing is that the Blues supposed “cap dumps” (outside of Steen) are actually probably worth their contracts. Bozak was worth roughly 1.5 wins this year which is ~ 5/6 million value and Allen was probably more. If Detroit trades for Allen or Bozak, they can easily flip him at the trade deadline for twice the return. Hell, even Steen has provided great value this year, but he’s definitely a cap dump because I can’t see any pro scouts watching him play and thinking he’s worth trading anything for.

You're not wrong that there are worse cap dump players out there, but if STL doesn't make a move, they can't afford Pietrangelo. That may be the choice they go with, and that's fine. But if you make a move it will be to clear cap and when cap space is at such a premium those assets won't get fair value. Why should the other GM's not either make a pitch to Pietrangelo, or take on cap from teams that will give them more value?

Yeah that’s true, my thinking is that there’s probably enough interest from around the league that it cancels out the Blues lack of leverage. I mean I’ve seen Bozak/Allen AGMs from like half the teams in the league. Just based on that I think the Blues would be able to get away without giving anything else up. Just last year Justin Braun got a 2nd + 3rd after a horrible season when teams knew the sharks needed Karlsson and Meier money.

You have to know that the "he can't be THAT good if they want to trade him" take is like the faultiest of logic right? Ben Bishop was a 0.921 goalie with Tampa Bay, was it also a mistake for them to trade him? Obviously not- they simply couldn't afford to allocate cap space for two starting caliber goalies- especially if one was only going to play 30 games a year. And Bishop has been even better ever since in Dallas (0.923 in his tenure there).

Both Binnington and Allen are good. But we can't justify spending nine million on goalies, so you go with the younger guy who happened to also win you a cup. That doesn't really change Allen's worth as a good goalie to other teams, because it's not a bad contract we're trying to get rid of. It's a good player we simply can't pay anymore. That might decrease what we get, but not that much. Historically speaking, the narrative that GMs go for the kill and steal players away when teams are in a bind is not true. Teams help teams out for that all the time. Everyone knew Tampa needed to move JT Miller last year and they still got a first for him.

Allen is among league leaders in Sv Pct with 1 year left he’s worth around 2nd-3rd because he leaves or you re-sign him if he doesn’t really well. 2.1 GAA and a .927 sv pct isn’t a cap dump lmao.

why? Howard is walking,t they have tons of space, only Holtby if he walks and Lehner to chase, and Allen gives them a one year patch for Howard, a quality goalie to see if he fits with them going forward, comes cheap, and has no commitment past next year unlike a big FA that could look like Bob. That's an especially good fit IMO

I could see them making this move later on, if they're not able to better use their cap space. The fact that Allen had some good numbers last year is less important, because he is probably not their goalie of the future. They would rather try and trade for someone like Demko, potentially take a long look at drafting Askarov if they trade down, or trade for someone currently developing in the AHL for a well stocked system.
Bernier actually played really well this year (His numbers are largely a reflection of the team,) so I would think we would probably be looking for a stop gap. Hopefully in the 22/23 season we are on the upswing. The cap will have likely not gone up much, so if it comes to it a UFA goalie, or a trade like this would be a good option then.

I like it but that cap circumvention with Steen only saves 1.34M when trading him instead of Bozak saves 1.75 M gives you Bozak on the roster instead of Steen. That's probably worth the pick over getting a forsling, it's just matter of which team does it (maybe the Devils? That puts him in a good enough place to waive him NTC. Hell if he's gonna get bought out he would just cost a 1st isntead of a 2nd and he could go anywhere why would he care. That could be part of the Detroit deal, Steen + a 1st would be fine for them, they could be convinced to follow through on a buyout agreement by dropping Allen's return from a 4th to a 5th)
I agree with your description on DLR just filling in the the last roster spot, you just missed Suter it seems
