I think you have some good ideas here, and then some great ones.
Very good thinking.
A couple of nits: (1) put me on record as saying Torgersson goes in the second round. (2) We'll trade you that second in 2020 but the third in 2021. We're not going to trade away two top picks in this draft.
I could be wrong about both. It'll be fun to see!
Hope you enjoyed the back-and-forth with the crazy Estonian. I really like reading all of his stuff. I have to ask him if his birthdate was really 1933 like it says on his Profile.
Thanks, I appreciate your feedback.
I agree that LAK would probably prefer to make the 3rd a 2021 pick instead, and actually that might be better for Colorado as well as this is a lot of high-end prospects to add in the same year; it might be better to spread them out a bit year-to-year more.
That said, I thought it would be fun to see how things could play out with some reasonably realistic trades if Sakic decides he wants to boost the prospect pool this season big time. There's a lot of talent from the last 1st to early 3rd and I would love it if we can get in on that action.
My thinking with trading down to #33 is that the talent difference between like 25 to 45 isn't that great, and picking up an extra 2nd would be really valuable.
Some thoughts on each pick:
#33 (OTT 2nd): Lukas Reichel (LW) ---- 1st line potential, so he might go higher, but there should at least be one good forward here if not him (eg. Mysak/Peterka/Brisson/Lapierre).
#45 (FLA 2nd): Topi Niemela (RD) ----- He might go slightly higher, but I think there will be at least one good RHD in this spot (eg. Barron/Niemela/Schneider/Villeneuve). If not then I would simply take a LHD like Jurmo/Wallinder/O'Rourke here, and then use pick #59 on a RHD Eamon Powell).
#46 (CBJ 2nd): Marat Khusnutdinov (C) --- He's hard to pin down due to being undersized along with the Russian factor, so I could see him dropping. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he was long gone by here. If he is then I'd look at Lapierre/Niederbach/Hirvonen in this spot.
#59 (VGK 2nd): Joni Jurmo (LD) ---- High upside LHD, but could be gone as high as late 1st. There should be a good Dman sitting here either way.
#66 (LAK 3rd): Joel Blomqvist (G) ----- Best goalie in the draft after Askarov, and an early 3rd is usually when teams start to take goalies. If not him then I'd take Commesso.
#76 (FLA 3rd): Daniel Torgersson (RW) ---- Will probably go in the 2nd round, but a lot of rankings and mocks have him around this area and he'd be a great pickup here.
#121 (COL 4th): Issak Phillips (LD) ---- Very raw LHD, but he has the size and raw skills and if he can put it together he could be an absolute beast and a steal.
#151 (COL 5th): Dmitri Ovchinnikov (RW) ---- With the last 3 picks I swing for the fences with some real boom-or-bust forwards, two of them from Russia.
#169 (FLA 6th): Alex Laferriere (RW)
#213 (COL 7th): Dmitry Rashevsky (LW)
