Trade With Toronto Based On 2015 Kessel Blockbuster

Description
On July 1st, 2015, the Penguins traded Nick Spaling, Kasperi Kapanen, Scott Harrington and their 2016 1st and 3rd round pick to the Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel with 15% retained salary, Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon and a 2016 2nd round pick. Kessel was a talented elite winger who had a controversial reputation since he was regarded as lazy, selfish, soft, and a locker room cancer. Currently, the Leafs have a winger in a similar situation, Mitch Marner. I'm not saying both teams should or will pull of a trade like that again, but just an idea.

Ya but Mitch Marner is better for the Leafs than Kessel ever was. Not even close to his value. Rust, Jarry, Marino, 1st is better value

If Marner was in the same situation as Kessel you have a valid point. Fact it despite his PP prowess, Kessel had morphed into a poor player with the Leafs. Don't know how you can really think Marner has sunk to the level of play that Kessel had done with the Leafs.

That equivalent would only work if Marner was equal to Kessel.

Problem is, he's miles and miles above him in level. Better than Kessel ever was, actually.

Wow, of course we’ll take on Johnson. Since we’re probably going to buyout Alzner, we have to replace him with another overpaid AHL 3rd pairing defenseman. Absolutely.

That would be too much. Theoretically, Marner doesn’t have a tremendous amount of value cuz of his contract & reputation. I think Kessel was a slightly better player than Marner in his prime cuz he was able to score 40 goals & 80 points on a much less prolific offensive team.

I agree that Marner is a better player than Kessel right now, but I don’t see the argument for him if you’re comparing to Kessel’s prime. Marner may be the better defensive Forward & possession driver but Kessel was able to put up 40 goals & 80 points with Bozak as his center. Perhaps Marner can have a bit more value but he wasn’t better than Phil.

Kessel’s all round game has never been great but his production with the Leafs was always off the charts. Even in his last season before the trade he put up 25 goals & 61 points playing mostly with Bozak as his center. That’s pretty good.

      He is and he was.

Also he was traded at 27, about turning 28 years old.

Marner's 23. Which makes him even more valuable.

1- Kessel never put up 40 goals with the Leafs, he put up 37 and 80 points in his 2nd last year with them, sure. but not 40 goals
2-Kessel had just had a season of 26 goals and 61 points in 82 games before he was traded, he was 27
3-Marner's best year as a leaf (so far) was 26 goals and 94 points in a full season a whole 5 years younger was during his best season
4-Marner just put up 16 goals and 61 points and 67 points in 59 games at the age of 23

So, at the time of their 'trades' Marner has had not only a better recent season, but a significantly better most recent season and he's significantly younger which increases his value.

Yes but you're not taking into consideration the linemate factor. Kessel was sharing the ice with Bozak and Lupul whereas Marner was playing with JT or Matthews. Quite a difference.

You are only taking the lnemate factor into consideration. Aging curves, raw scoring numbers and advanced stats all show marner as better

Maybe he is better, but you also have to take into consideration of Marner's cap hit. He's on one of the worst contracts in the league. Surely that lowers his value, don't it?

So kessel at peak, and marner not at peak yet are at a similar level, and? You do realize that means marner is more valuable because any team trading for him has the entire peak of his career and not the tail end of it, right?

Whatever you say man. I understand you might not like the trade but I’m just telling ya, Kessel peak & Marner are at a similar level.

      Marner isn’t at his peak...

Kessel’s all round game has never been great but his production with the Leafs was always off the charts. Even in his last season before the trade he put up 25 goals & 61 points playing mostly with Bozak as his center. That’s pretty good.

Kessel got so many of his points on the PP. Believe he was minus 25. IMO he was often worse player on his line.
