Yup.

I’m assuming Thomas was non negotiable but looking back, he’s the piece sabres needed to get fair value out of ROR

That coupled with two cap dumps (Berg and Sobotka), Thomas definitely should've been the ask by BUF. Thompson was undoubtedly the counter by STL, I'm shocked they didn't meet in the middle with Kostin or even Kyrou.

Botterill has a fetish for tall NCAA players, I’d bet he thought Tage was better than Kostin/Kyrou.

Absolutely indefensible that Botts didn't get Thomas, Kyrou or Kostin. That should have been the absolute floor for a guy like ROR.

I dont understand other Buffalo fans who argue this.

They were never going to get Rob Thomas, but they absolutely should have been able to get Kyrou or Kostin. Or hell, at the very least Robby Fabbri would have been better.

Looking back it's funny what came out about the trades he was asking for. I know the ask from MTL was 3rd overall for ROR, Bergevin said no, offered Poehling as the center piece with apparently a roster player and a future pick but without that years 3rd overall it was a non starter.

How, how do you go from asking for 3oa plus to settling for the warm bag of piss that he got?

Yeah I agree. I think if habs offered a deal like 2019 first, Poehling, and a guy like Byron, they would’ve offered a very similar package. I get they are division teams so if they offered another prospect like Brook or Primeau at the time, it could’ve got the deal done.

MTL didnt even really have stand out prospects at the time was the problem. Brook and Poehling were our top 2 but Primeau hadn't become a stand out in college till that season following, and Romanov wasnt drafted till the 2nd round that year.

Division rivals in trades are over exaggerated, it's the reason Ottawa has lost the majority of thier trades, you can even go back to how Boston got peanuts for Thorton and Seguin when they moved on from them. Always wondered if it was more owners then GMs that worry about the division, not wanting to see thier star play against them so often but who knows in front offices
