Did you read the actual article where this "story" originated? It was a Rangers beat writer answering questions from readers. It's all just a hypothetical based on the story about the Panthers potentially looking to cut salary.

Under $6 million for maybe the most underrated center in the NHL.....there would be 30 teams calling FLA about acquire Barkov. Over the last 3 season he ranks 10th among Centers in P/GP while also being a guy who could be a Selke finalist any given year. Honestly if he played in a bigger market, this kid would be a star. IDK that I could put a package together from a Bruins standpoint, but there would be very few "untouchable" young players or picks for me in a deal for Barkov.

Literally the only player from PIT FLA would consider trading Barkov for is Crosby, and we both know that'd never happen.

Malkin's good, but he's turning 34. I don't think he's as valuable as Barkov due to his age. At least PIT would need to add to that move.

So essentially scraps for an elite 70-90 point #1C and then you play him on the 3rd line right now he's about as good as either Sid or Geno what a joke. Pittsburgh doesn't have the pieces to land a Center of Barkovs talents that's for sure.
