Toronto needs cap relief it is as simple as that. Is Fiala as gifted offensively as Nylander? No! But does Fiala's all around defensive game make up for that? Yes! Nylander is garbage defensively. He has never won a puck battle in his life, he would turn away from going in the corner with a 6th grader. Fiala's value comes with his contract and and his all around play. This is not a bad trade for either team, as Minny has more all around good players, where as Toronto needs players with an all around game not simply offensive minded.

Not to mention that this shaves 4M off Toronto's cap, what are they going to do when Reilly needs a new contract or especially Andersson after this season? What the Toronto organization and fan base fails to realize is that there are a lot more factors in evaluating players other than skill.

Fiala has one more year left on his deal. How much more money will Fiala make after one year?

If Fiala was locked on that contract for another 5 years... then maybe... but it would be foolish to trade down in skill that much for one year of cap relief.

You are wrong so very wrong, if the Leafs need cap room it's the 10 million in Johnsson/Kerfoot/Kapenen that gets moved, you don't sell Nylander at an insulting price of Fiala to gain 4 million.

Easy no from Leafs. How did Fiala fare in NHL at ages 19 to 21? Nylander was 60+ point player in NHL.

Fiala is a middle 6 winger, his numbers are exactly the same as Johnsson

Just to show the difference in Fiala and Nylander and who a comparable to Fiala is:

Kevin Fiala 287 GP 158 pts = .55 PPG
Andreas Johnsson 125 GP 67 Pts = .53 PPG
William Nylander 307 GP 221 pts = .71 PPG

Now all I'm gonna hear is that Johnsson plays with this guy and Nylander plays with this guy and yup they do play with talented and skilled players but you need skill to play with talented of that calibre it's just a fact that elite players don't take a 4th liner and make them a top liner. It takes talent and skill to play with elite players

Insulting? Fiala has 5 less points this year then Nylander? can you even open your eyes? He has played his entire career with less than gifted offensive players and still puts up 40 - 60 pts consistently, while playing strong in 200ft of the ice. Why would they sell the only players on that team on good contracts? Is your plan for the Leafs to find a way to pay everyone 10M a season? LOL It is much more reasonable to gain 4M than your plan on Johnsson, Kappanen and Kerfoot.

Question. How do you plan on replacing these guys in your lineup? Are you planning on only having two lines of forwards? Cause even ELC are roughly 800,000 a piece, but I'm very confident your team would be so much worst then they are now if you do that, if you replace all three at 1M a piece then sure you save 7M but this team is even more garbage then it already is when you can swap one for one save 4M and the team doesn't miss a beat.

what does 1M in cap space do for you?

Why don't you bring up some defensive stats to try and see how this works out? Or maybe open your eyes and see that Nylander is dog Sh** in his own zone and couldn't win a puck battle to save himself.

1) I don't want him, I'm not a minny fan.

But, Nylander is an offensive minded player that has a lot of offensive skill something which Minny could use, they have a wealth of well rounded guys and Nylander could complement this even though he is liable defensively, they have players in place to help him defensively while they give him an offensive boost.

as for Toronto wanting Fiala, he is well rounded, he is good in all areas of the ice, and would benefit Toronto a lot in terms of improving their team defense while their other offensive minded players similar to Nylander carry the offensive and boost Fiala's offensive numbers.

Leafs reject based on Nylander is a much more valuable player than Fiala , Fiala is essentially Johnsson. I could see the Leafs countering with Nylander, Kerfoot and Johnsson for Dumba , Fiala and Ek Eriksson.

You are way over valuing Kerfoot and Johnsson.

Yes those Defensive stats your so proud to spew have nothing to with the Nashville and Minnesota Defensive structure at all, it's all Fiala all by himself - both offensive and defensive stats can be skewed to favor players. Here's the main point Fiala is a middle 6 winger (Leafs have those in droves) if the Leafs are going to entertain moving Nylander it will be for a Defense man not a middle 6 winger. The trade makes no sense for the leafs

Fiala is a top 6 winger. He is starting to emerge. You are missing the boat. Watch his last month of play he was constantly making defenders look stupid. Nylander has had the more consistent career, but I was low on Fiala at the beginning of the season and by mid season it was starting to click for him, now he just gets it and I suspect he will be very good through his prime.

Yes absolutely he has benifited from that, but the thing about non defensive players in strong defensive structure they don't last, Vatrano, Smith, Seguin in Boston, Nylander under Babcock, they still have to be good defensively to be feasible in a strong defensive system. Fiala has 54 in 64 how is that a 'Middle 6' winger??

Look there's a few more things to look at. Has Fiala put up comparable numbers to Nylander this season yes he has Fiala is also riding a career high in shot percentage of 13.1 (his average is around 9.5, Nylander also is riding a career high in shot percentage of 15.7 (his career average is 11.4)

Fiala has 1 season remaining at 3 million yup that's 4 million less than Nylander so what's Fiala next contract look like? I mean he's comparable to Nylander right so he's at what 7 million ? It really makes no sense to swap Nylander for Fiala,Leafs need a defenceman that's the bottom line , makes a lot more sense to move Nylander and his cap hit for a RHD

I'm just glad @SammyT_51 and @Boomer125 agree that Jeremy Bracco is absolute trash given their rather weak argument about past season's point totals somehow meaning anything for a player's current worth. I look forward to them pointing this out to every dumb Leaf fan who acts like he has ANY value.

As for the trade, it's a gamble either way. As @TanSor said, if Nylander can become a center he'd potentially be the player the Wild need. Given the current sample size, Wild would probably need to add something and since it's a big if that Nylander can be a top 6 center. I'd rather roll the dice that Fiala can keep up what he's been doing the last half of the season and continue to be the player than can take over a game. I think if they need to chase a trade for a center, you trade from your position of strength and that is their defensive depth.

Fiala is a RFA, so there is still plenty of team control involved with him.

I don't think MN should make the trade. Fiala being $4m cheaper next year offers much more cap flexibility in what could be a buyers market headed into next season.

The truth about Bracco:
Fantastic point producer in the AHL, PP specialist in the AHL.
Last season leaf fans had the ability to say he was stuck down the depth chart. No injuries so no call ups.
This season Leafs have had injury after injury and still no Bracco called up that speaks volumes about where he is and who he is as a player. Is he worthless? No, he has just enough value to be a throw in to tip the scale on a larger trade or at most a 4th rnd pick.

Wow! I could write a book responding to everyone’s comments here...

My take: Fiala and Nylander a equals, period. IF Nylander has an edge it is because of his contract (cost certainty) as Fiala is going to command $7-8million for his next contract...and IF he can cut it as a center (tbd?).
Those of you talking about Fiala’s defensive prowess/2-way ability...it’s a work-in-progress at best. He has a looooong ways to go before he will get any Selke votes. What he is though is a spectacular offensive player with hands, wheels, and creativity that rivals just about anyone in the league! His biggest issue is consistency, but his skillset is 100% elite! Fiala can absolutely take over a game and dominate! Can Nylander???

Bracco really showed his true colours this season with lack of defensive awareness and laziness. Thats why less productive AHL player surpassed him. They were better overall players (guys like Korshkov, Engvall etc etc).

As for Nylander. He has consistently been 60+ point player since age 19 except for last season. Thats insane considering how undervalued he seems in trade offers on this site. While I always liked Fiala (big fan), I dont see them being equals. Fiala has had an amazing jump in performances last half a season, but is he going to do that exact thing continuesly year after year? Maybe. Nylander has done that and can play center very well (career FO% of 50.8% and D zone FO% of 54.1%, shows good defensive responsibility). Frankly, I think Minnesota adds more than just a bit on top of Fiala for Nylander, but I love Fiala!
