Description
Disclaimer - Maybe this makes more sense in the offseason but I dont wanna redo it. Leafs shed ~3M in cap in the offseason while still improving the starting roster for next year. For a similar price tag Kapanen is still probably higher value than Saad, just bc of his age but both are 50point players you can slot on any line. However Leafs dont have a true top line LW. On a deep leafs offense hyman and marleau are ideally 2-3 line guys. Saad would look amazing with JT and Marner. Can play that Hyman type roll but is a much better scorer and just as gritty. Gus>>>Zaits especially for the price tag and term and can slot in on 2nd pair right side or 3rd pair left side after Gardiner leaves and singlehandedly dragged the hawks pp from last in the league to top 10. Hawks underpay on Sandin for eating cap and bc gap between gus and zaits is bigger than the one between kap and saad

WOW, Kapanen alone is worth most of that package and then you throw in Sandin? Gus is good bot not worth the difference in value especially since another LHD is the last thing the Leafs need.

I really dont think so. 2015 saad trade is a great comparable. Young 50 point top 6 winger traded by a cap strapped team for a middle 6 center and (at the time) a solid-good looking prospect. Saad>anisimov and gus>dano in that trade comparable. Then leafs dump a horrid contract in zaits for the price of a good prospect but pick up a second. Everyone knows leafs are desperate to shed $$ and saad at 5M is a GOOD deal. Could very realistically pot 30 goals this year playing on the 3rd line.

There's no chance of Sandin, but don't under-estimate Gus. He means ALOT more to the Hawks that Kapanen ever will.

Not a bad offer. What about Mitchell over Boq (think the hawks really wanna keep him) and dump the first down to a 2nd?

Also Gus frequently plays the right side which makes him even more offensively dangerous

Whats delusional is thinking teams will overpay for a player the other team cant even resign. Same reason the hawks couldnt get any value for saad (2015) sharp or oduya. Leafs fans are gonna be sad when dubas cuts and runs with the first decent offer he can get instead of watching Kap walk for nothing. This also fills the org need for sandin. Reilly Muzzin Gus is a GREAT left side D for the forseeable future

Left hand shot playing on the right side gives him a better angle...same reason all high scoring wingers play their "off" side. Gus is already top 3 in Dman goals

Relative to their value they do. Again. 2015 saad trade is the perfect comparable

They have other pieces they can move before Kapanen goes. He is likely top priority after Marner.

I’m a Sabres fan,
so I’d LOVE for the Leafs to make a deal like this

But there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO CHANCE in hell that they’d take on Saad at 5mil (or even 3mil for that matter)
They’re gonna be MOVING OUT salary, not adding
Makes way more sense for them to use the Cap space they’d get to sign their youngsters
And if they did have to move a guy like Kapanen,
it would be for picks or prospects...
not a guy making 5mil on their Cap

That’s utterly ridiculous
“Creative” is not the right word to describe this trade proposal dude

Thanks for kind words, exo2769. As for question.. Kapanen imo. He is younger and more valuable. Gustafsson is great Dman who I would take on Leafs any day of the week but he is not Kapanen level at least as of now. Why? Kapanen can be put into any situation and would be effective plus his speed is one of the best assets he has. He can backcheck and kill penalties which I havent seen Gus do. He is PP QB type of Dman. Kapanen is 20-30 goal scorer.. but they arent that far off each other imo. Kapanen would fetch more in trade tho due to his age, skill.

Maybe but Kap or Nylander are the only guys that are expendable from an org need perspective and will actually get them a valuable return. Zaits is border on negative value and would leave them with no RHD. Brown wont shed enough cap and wont bring back more than a mid round pick. Marleau is still a good player but a huge risk for teams with his $$ and age

Lol this trade does move out salary. And its "creative" bc leafs improve or at the least maintain the quality of their roster for next season

This is maybe the first levelheaded response in this thread lol. Does a first or a guy like lily or johnsson over sandin make this more even from a leafs perspective? I admittedly havent followed Sandin this year, my logic was just throw in an A prospect from the leafs end to even out the value.

Good analysis! I appreciate the feedback. AND this is all for FUN! Cheers!

I have a different take, but these simply might be our biases toward our favorite teams...or just more knowledge of our own team. In my opinion...Gus is more valuable. The Blackhawks had the leagues WORST powerplay at the beginning of the year AND they were 28th all of last year. It's not like Toews/Kane are new to the Powerplay. (2) things happened. 1.) JC took over for Q and 2.) JC replaced Keith on the Power play with Gus. that happened mid November. Now they're 14th in the league and rising. Gus is also on pace to be the Hawks highest goal scoring dman since Chris Chelios in 1987. 30+ years ago. He's doing it with less than a full season too. (One Exception is Big Buf, BUT he played both forward and defense for the Hawks which is why I exclude him.) Also, Gus...a dman...that scores more than Kapanen...a forward that gets to play next to Matthews or Tavares! Gus has a $1.2M contract for next year. So while I do agree the RFA status of Kap is SOLID...another team could flip Gus next year if they wanted which also really increases Gus's trade value. $1.2M is crazy low.

Right. And have 2 rhd on the roster both of which are MAYBE 2nd pair guys. If they dump zaits they need a legit top 4 dman
