As soon as Connor Brown plays his 10th game of the season, he is then owed a $3,250,000 bonus affecting next years cap space, currently in the middle of his 7th game he has 0 goals, and 0 assists for 0 points. To me, this is a similar situation that the Oilers got themselves in with Ryan Strome. Clearly under performing and unlucky, but this team and this fanbase have 0 patience and if he isn't putting up points, time for a change of scenery. Here's the trade and why it works for both teams:
EDM
- Taylor Raddysh comes in as a young kid, only 25 years old with RFA protection (also played with McDavid in junior) with a very low cap hit. As Connor Brown goes out, Raddysh comes in as a body in-out replacement. Same with Mrazek, one of the few bright spots in Chicago, former goalie of Ken Holland's in Detroit. Swapped for Jack Campbell in this instance, is at 1.9 with retention for 1 more year instead of 5 for another 4 years. This frees up so much cap to give Edmonton flexibility towards the trade deadline
CHI
- I get it CHI fans are not happy with us Oilers fan dumping Campbell, but here's why this works. You get a 1st and 2nd to take him on. For the next 3-4 years they won't be competitive, he can tandem with Soderblom and if things get bad, let him play in Rockford and have Jaxson Stauber play more NHL games. In addition, all CHI has to do with Connor Brown is play him all of 1 game. Once he has played 1 game, they are owed 3.25 million dollars in 24/25 (which shouldn't affect a rebuilding team) and his value skyrockets. CHI can play him right up until the deadline, where he can primarily focus on finding his footing, instead of being dubbed "the answer" in a "cup bound" Oilers team with all the expectations in the world. This is a guy who had over half the league interested in him, at 775 he will have suiters at the deadline, who will add on to the return in this trade
Whats next for Edmonton?
- Sign Sam Gagner
- Sign Patrick Kane? Clearly this team is lacking a finishing touch (which is insane to think about), and Kane has that without a doubt. In this hypothetical I gave him the identical mid year deal with gave Evander Kane. Patrick is someone who can play primarily 5v5 in the offensive zone and PP2, him and Raddysh solve the need for scoring supplements.
- Trade for a defence and/or goalie. Next year when Mrazek's deal is up in this hypothetical we'll need another goalie, and depending on Skinner's play this can be a 1A or 1B. Either shooting for the stars with a Juuse Saros or looking at FA options like DeSmith or Reimer. As for defence, there is not a whole lot RD in the market to get. Dumba or Tanev do come to mind however, at 50% retained and Ceci going the other way, we can easily afford either or AND Patrick Kane.
- Trade Broberg, whether its for a defence TDL pickup or a big time goalie acquisition in the offseason. Will he develop into a full time NHLer, likely. That isn't good enough for us, best 2 players in the league we need to supplement whatever value he has left at a big time upgrade, no more holding on to him. It shows how well we value his development bringing in Keith, Kulak then Ekholm ahead of him on LD.
- Fire Dustin Schwartz firstly, then Ken Holland.
Lol, imagine if that was true. McDavid is paid 86 of his 100 million in signing bonuses. His cap hit would be 1750000.
You are thinking of performance bonuses, which is Brown's case, but you are still wrong. They still affect the cap just in a different way. Any performance bonus that can't be paid under the cap in the season they are earned show up as a penalty for the team the next season. With Brown and the Oilers, right now they are lining up to have $3,225,000 in penalties to 24-25s cap due to Brown's bonus. With him moved to Chicago, they have lots of cap space and would fit it under this seasons cap with no penalties.
Signing bonuses doesn't affect the salary cap. And Chicago accepts the deal with the addition of a prospect or another second
Still not close. Campbell costs minimum 2 firsts to dump now. Add in raddysh whom the hawks would only trade if it's an overpay, aka another first. Lastly mrazek is off to a hot start and if his numbers stay anywhere close to steady he might bring back a pick with retention. Campbell is untradeable until a couple more years come off that deal and Edmonton isn't winning anything until they get a nhl caliber goalie.
So, in your own description, you give us a 1st and 2nd to dump Soup, but give us nothing for Raddysh and Mrazek half retained? Doesn't work, Brown isn't nearly enough to cover the gap.
