The retention means Buffalo is going to get a HAUL, and 5 mil per over 5 years is heavy retention so the Coyotes get a sweetender of Rousek (who isn't a top 15 sabres prospect but is an interesting flier and Fla 1st which is looking like it might be #32 anyways)

Given the way Byram is playing I don't see the Avs doing that.. but the Sabres will still get a shit load from this and the Coyotes get some real nice stuff from the Avs for retaining a massive amount on Eichel and sending them a very underrated and good player in Johan Larsson.

Buffalo gets an absolute blue chip center prospect in Newhook, and the Avs other 2 most recent 1st round selections in Olausson (2021) and Barron (2020).. they also get 2023 Col 1st and 2023 Col 3rd.

That's an absolute load of a deal.

For their troubles Coyotes keep Kaut who is 22 and nearing the end of his life cycle as a "prospect" but he'll get a shot in AZ. MacDonald was on waivers to start the year and is only up due to injuries.. he's got good underlyings he's a "why not" for AZ. The real value to the Yotes is Jost who has tons of pedigree and despite playing on a top team hasn't popped as a pro. Similar to Kaut he'll get a real shot in AZ.

Meanwhile - post surgery and come playoff time the Avs down the middle are gonna go Mac, Eichel, Kadri, Larrson which is insane.

buffalo was always going to get a good haul but getting Arizona to eat 25m worth of salary over 5 years and cap hit is worth way more than a late first. Maybe a late 1st or second for each year but not 1 total

For a 50% retained Eichel? That's a very good deal. Maybe add some conditions based on Eichels health but even if he's 80% of the player he was before this is a great deal. 5 years at 5M is a steal of a contract
