Trade - If Tyler Johnson Clears Waivers
I mean to <a href="/users/Hedman77" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Hedman77</a> ’s point, Johnson does have some value, so maybe some draft or prospect capital will have to go the other way but the structure of this is pretty clever

Lower cap but 2 buyout options
Is this a thing? Like is the NHL considering this as an option?
Could create a crazy summer in terms of players who could be eligible as Free Agents!

The Ideal Brock Contract
I really like this contract and line of thinking! I could see both sides willing to go down this road, although it does present some risks to both sides.
With Marner's contract it is hard to think that Brock would be willing to sign for anything under 9.5 or 10 long term IMO. I cant imagine Brock's team believing that Marner is $3mil - $4mil per year more valuable than he is, so why would they sign a long term on those dollars?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>. And it still 1.435m more per year than the very comparable Aho</div></div>
And since in this scenario the Leaf's are running a 22 man roster, it might be best to include the 22nd player first and then play the same tactic, so then it would only be 600k over Aho.

VAN and BOS trades
Canucks arent interested in this deal either. IMO Taking on Zack Smith takes away the value of sending Erikkson to Ottawa. Canucks counter with LE with $1.5 million retained for Zack Smith.
Ottawa does this because they are getting away from Zack Smith plus they are taking on a $4.5mil cap hit for only $1.5mil actual dollars. Over the 3 years that you would have LE on the books his net salary that Ottawa would pay is $4,500,000. Ottawa saves $6.5mil in salary for Smith and $9mil from Erikkson (Cap hit v. Actual Dollars).
Canucks do this because they are saving $1.5 in cap room in 19/20 & 20/21 and $4.5 in 21/22. They also have the ability to turn Smith into another asset before the season starts or at the TDL.

also, if getting out from under Erikkson's contract was that easy why would the Canucks make the Lucic trade? Why wouldn't they just deal with Ottawa independently?

Capfriendly fans are the best!
Risto is the worst player in the NHL according to most Sabres fans but would also take a package including McDavid, + + to trade him.

8.4 over 5 compensation is 1st, 2nd & 3rd rounder.
I’d prefer that offer and watch Winnipeg squirm.

Jets let Connor and Laine go through offersheets
I appreciate this thought process and post so much! I love the outside the box thinking and the looking towards the future in this post!
IMO - Laine would need to get the 4 1st's to let him go, but with the restructuring that the Jets need this offseason i think they put themselves in a great spot by considering this!

Who needs to add for first overall
I love the question too!
Honestly - I believe the Canucks ask for more. Pettersson is the real deal and there is no risk - after this season most Canucks fans I talk to are convinced that Pettersson will be a 100 point guy for the next 10-15 years. Hughes is still a risk. Not a risk to be a bust, but a risk to be a good but not great NHLer.
In my mind, the Canucks have a player who wants to be in Vancouver... who has dreamt of being a Canuck and I see no reason for trading him unless it included something else substantial.

PK leaves
Vancouver declines and instead offers Virtanen or Baertschi and this years first (assuming it is not top 3 which we will know in a week).
Nashville accepts because it solves their problems secondary scoring - as i believe both these players would score 20+ with Nashville's team. It helps with the salary Cap crunch that will be coming with Josi's extension which i believe will be in the 7-8mil range, and i believe it would also solve the potential expansion draft issues as they will now be able to protect Ellis, Josi and Ekholm with Fabbro on ELC. Someone with more understanding of the expansion draft could confirm? I know that Quinn Hughes isn't eligible so why would Fabbro?

Why Not
Can i ask why you are trading Loui Eriksson here? You have $12m in cap space, so he is not hurting the team in this regard, and giving away a 1st round pick to save cap space that you are not using does not make sense to me? If you do not want him on your team and cannot find a trade that makes sense, why not send him to Utica and save the first rounder?
I do like the idea of targeting Jordan Eberle though. Price might be a bit high, but i think he would be a great piece to play with Horvat.

The Usual Suspects
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>When was the last time you saw a rental of Panarin's caliber available?</div></div>
After a quick search, I believe I found 2 comparables:
* Jeff Carter from CBJ to LAK for a decent D (Jack Johnson) and a 1st
* Kevin Shattenkirk last year - for 2 AHLers (Zach Sanford and Brad Malone), and a first, and a conditional pick that was not sent.
Not saying the haul is impossible, as you are right that Panarin is a dynamic player, but that is a high price to pay for a rental...

I agree - they can and should trade futures for the now, but... 2 first rounders (I am calling either Fabbro or the 2021 1st as a first rounder) and a contributing roster player for a rental 'isnt that big'? Show me a rental in the last 5 years with that type of haul?!?!?
I may be wrong on that, but it seems crazy high! Good on CBJ GM if he can pull off a haul like that whether it is to Nashville or not!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Booyah</b></div><div>I would wait and see what Fabbro does this summer, if we don't have to give up Virtanen then why do it?</div></div>
I could not agree with this statement more! My dream is that he would go back for his senior season and we could be involved in a bidding war in August of 2020...
However - Bob Mackenzie has reported that he wants to turn pro after his Boston College season ends this year, which means that the summer might be too late, and I think the player is worth the risk!

Getting Goldobin
Vancouver GM has stated that as they are hosting the draft this year he will not be trading any picks from 2019 draft.
I also think that Vancouver has a deficiency in skilled wingers, and an abundance of bottom six guys (... For example, one of the most common wing partners for Bo Horvat this season is Tim Schaller.... eeeeks), so prying a skilled player from them with more bottom 6 guys would not be attractive.
I do not know the VGK depth chart well enough to suggest alternate solutions...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CFMan</b></div><div>Think its a good idea to target him in the future, but Fabbro is highly touted and Nashville would want a big name scorer ie panarin, stone, duchene, etc for the playoffs over a guy finding his stride in Virtanen.</div></div>
Fabbro holds too much leverage to be used as a 1 for 1 in those types of trades... if he doesnt want to spend the next 8 years of his life in Ottawa or Columbus he just doesn't sign and goes where he wants in August of 2020.
From a Vancouver perspective, and as much as I would hate to lose a Vancouver guy (... albeit to get a Vancouver guy), I think you have to make this deal...
2019 D Pairings of:
Edler Fabbro
Hughes Tanev
Hutton Stetcher
That is 3 pretty decent NHL defensive pairings... it does what the organization has been talking about for a long time in insulating their rookies with veterans, and on tough nights/matchups/pk HCTG can still go back to Edler Tanev if he wants...

Serious question
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Depending on when the offer comes in, the Leafs would have more than 7 days. If the offer came August 1st the Leafs have two months to get totally cap compliant. Sure Kapanen is worth more than 2nd rounder, but do teams really want to pay/overpay for another teams RFAs? They have to deal with their own RFA (at a reasonable cost) and the cap. Do teams (and their owners) want to deal with the Leaf and their financial strength when the Leafs could offer front loaded contracts to RFAs, to low and mid end guys.</div></div>
The Leaf's aren't the only team that can afford to pay front loaded contracts. While the Leaf's may be the richest franchise (I dont even know if that is true..), there are dozens of others that have the financial wherewithal to do it too.
