<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Its only fair if you look at it from a perspective that Toronto is desperate for a RHD defenceman, they are far from desperate. The defence they have got them to the playoffs and set a franchise record for wins and points. Nylander is a star and will have a huge career, a way better career than Tanev. You wouldn't be trading Tanev if you believed differently.

So you know the trade isn't fair.

Tanev would instantly become a top pairing guy in TO playing with Reilly, and he'd make Reilly a better player but Reilly is already a great player and is still only 24 or something like that. So he's still got room to grow. Tanev has peaked. Nylander would instantly become one of the two most talented players on Vancouver, right up there with Boeser. (I value Horvat ahead of Nylander though since he's a good centre but its close and Nylander has a lot more skill than Horvat). So essentially the Canucks would be obtaining a world class talent Nylander for a very good defensive defenceman who has past his best seasons. That isn't remotely fair.

Do the Leafs want Tanev, likely yes. Do they want him at any cost? No definitely not. So with that in mind, you need to propose a trade that would look attractive to the Leafs and losing Nylander isn't attractive unless you offer way more than he's worth. He's the best player in the trade, you don't give up the best player in the trade unless you are getting either equal value in players coming back or in assets that will be better in the future. None of this is happening in a Nylander for Tanev trade.

As for the trade above, as much as I like Brown, this trade greatly helps out Toronto and comes at the cost of a very good young depth winger but one that will have trouble getting off the 4th line due to the depth ahead of him. Moving him for Tanev would solidify the defence and at the cost of a middle 6 winger who is on the 4th line in TO.

Here's a question though, would you retain half of Tanev's salary to upgrade the pick to a first?</div></div>

I've maintained that Tanev for a late 2019 1st is probably fair. If the Canucks retained 50% for two years on Tanev's contract then the Leafs would need to add another pick or a prospect.
