Rebuilding while staying competitive
Why would we give up 4 players and 2 first rounders for a guy sent to the AHL this year, a horrible and toxic player in Deangelo, and 1 good 2nd liner

Stand Back I Dont Know How Big This Thing Will Get
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Grievous</b></div><div>That is an extreme over pay for a 4th line Center, despite the additional year. I don’t agree with that valuation at all.</div></div>
Few things here:
- despite playing a "4th line" role Dowd is playing much closer to low 2nd-3rd line minutes averaging almost 16 minutes a game, he can easily fit into a defensive 3rd line role.
- He's one of the best defensive forwards in the league in models such as A&R, and has consistently helped shut down top lines, something pretty much no other line can do for Washington.
- He has an extremely low cap hit plus the extra year on his contract, making him valuable over the next two years.
- Lars Eller returned a 2nd round pick while in a down year, and not only is Dowd better defensively, he's got the extra year and is outscoring Eller from last year on an offensively inept team.
Bottom line, if a team wants Dowd they're going to have to pay up, and Washington is going to be looking for at least a 2nd.

Dowd plays like 16 minutes a games and is a top 10 defensive forward lol. you are clearly ignorant to his game (shocker). He gets deployed a lot in the Dzone which most intelligent folks find useful. :) do better

Trying to remain competitive
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoSeider53</b></div><div>Hertl doesn't waive his NMC, For the 2nd oldest team in the NHL. And why would the Sharks want that locker room cancer?
And Noah Hanifin isn't wasting his time, On a team that needs full rebuild once Ovechkin retires.</div></div>
Will you ever give up either of these? Being the oldest team in the league hasn't stopped players from going to Pittsburgh, and it's not going to stop people from coming to Washington. If Hertl doesn't waive, it'll be because he wants to stay in San Jose, not because another team is older. And no matter how much people want to speak it into existence, Kuznetsov is not a "locker room cancer". The guy doesn't get along well with Management but is liked within the locker room.
As for Hanifin, money talks. a 3 year rebuild won't scare someone away if the money is right, especially when the team is already moving young guys into big roles.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SevenLeg</b></div><div>Yeah, they're not scoring much but they're somehow 3rd in the Atlantic. If they're really planning to compete, I think they gotta target a real difference-maker upfront (Ex. Buchnevich). Those extra $2.5M gained from a Mantha+ for Pearson swap could help.</div></div>
Caps have the 2nd best Pts% in the metro, but adding 2.5m in cap doesn't do anything as they've got over 8m in cap space and will still have 6m when Patches comes back. Mantha's been really solid for the Caps alongside McMike I wouldn't want to give him away for Pearson rn. The only guy I'd look at trying to get from MTL is Ylonen to replace Philips/Oshie in the middle 6.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bricher33</b></div><div>His numbers in the K and the M playoffs were pretty meh last year.</div></div>
Missing a lot of context here. He was getting maybe 4 minutes of ice time per game at points as the 13th forward, the fact he scored at all in the K is quite a shock given how little he was on the ice. He also had a great regular season for the M, talking only about the playoffs is a bit cherry picked. Now has 13 points in 21 games in Hershey while playing on the 4th line and elevating players who are likely career AHLers.

There's really no reason for the Caps to move on from Lindgren right now. He's their best goalie and they're still trying to compete for the playoffs regardless of how futile it might be. Lindgren isn't available. Kuemper is, I'd have to imagine.

I don't think the Caps would accept this because of how McMichael and Lapierre have stepped up. The forward room is going to get even more crowded when Pacioretty returns and DC already has a lot of middle 6 forwards. I imagine another team will go for Wennberg, but not Washington. (also won't need Mantha going back with the backstrom LTIR space, and Mantha's played well this year)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeychiken2234</b></div><div>The Washington Capitals are not good. I’m sorry you need to find fancy stats to make you feel better. My word is not law but my opinion is that they aren’t good and no where near being a competitive team. The D is hilariously over rated. They’re old (their older guys don’t hold a candle to bostons at any point ever) The majority of the guys injured are getting older (legit never a good thing ever) goalies are not dependable so a bounce back isn’t a guaranteed thing although possible. What magical top 6 forward are they gonna trade for? Gonna be a big price no? Over Pay a free agent? Oh and a new coach is magically going to wave his wand and make them dominate. Also the pieces they lose how are you replacing them 😂 my god you really can’t be taking me calling the capitals bad a personal thing. Because you’re getting personal and I’m worried for you. The capitals don’t care about your feelings. And neither does the athletic I promise you it’s going to be okay.</div></div>
Lets test your knowledge here for a second:
1. Which parts of the defense are "overrated"? Carlson, with 71 points in 78 games in his last full season? Jensen and Van RIemsdyk, with great eye test and analytics? Sandin and Fehervary, the young and improving defensemen? enlighten me.
2. Which Old guys on the team don't hold a candle to Bostons at any point ever? Because last I checked, only one team had the greatest goal scorer of all time, and it's not Boston.
3. Which pieces are they losing in the offseason that can't be replaced and will make them worse? Sheary?
4. Cute that you don't think that Washington would be willing to pay a large price for a top 6 winger, especially considering that's the reason they loaded up on draft capital at the deadline.
I know you're a Flyers fan, which likely means you're quite frustrated with the Flyers lack of extended playoff success over the last ten years, but there's no need to try and use your incredibly limited knowledge of a rival team to project your team's failures onto. I find it extremely funny you seem so bent out of shape that someone refuted your claim on a website that, fun fact, is created for specifically that type of discourse. Keep going on about "Muh Athletic bad" while ignoring the actual points though buddy

I'm sorry your opinion has nothing to back up what you're saying, I'd once again advise you to drop the elitist talk and actually learn about they team you want to talk about before pulling things out of your ass. Half your argument was "they're old", yet it is very clear from Boston's older players still filling top roles that age isn't a disqualifier. Again, if you actually knew what you were talking about, you could see what everyone else does, which is that Laviolette is past his expiration date in Washington and has fallen into the Mike Keenan traps of trying things from the past that don't work anymore. It's sad that you have no evidence to back up your claims, yet you continue to talk on and on and disregard actual evidence as "I dOnT cArE aBoUt YoUr OpInIoN". It may come as a shock to you, but your word is not law, and simply decreeing "capitals are bad because I say so" does not make it true. Maybe learn the game and check some of the stats before waffling on again buddy.

I urge you to watch a capitals game with the horrible attitudes and effort, only getting older, injuries will be back as they get older. And the defense is just hilariously bad I don’t get what you don’t get. They’re no where near competing for a cup. Competing for a bottom 6-7 spot next year yes. But next time I’ll for sure be sure to ask my heroes at the athletic if it’s okay to disagree with them</div></div>
Tarik El Bashir, the top Caps athletic writer, has been around the team for forever. I would suggest you actually take your own advice and watch some capitals games from different points in the year, it is patently obvious that the team was wrecked by injuries and an incompetent coach (no innovation, failure to change from Laviolette after Carlson injury). Since Laviolette is on an expiring contract, the largest problem will be gone, and this team is going to add a top 6 forward (the GM himself said he was going for one) to go along with young guys like Strome, Milano, Protas, Sandin, Fehervary, Alexeyev, etc. It is patently obvious you are unfamiliar with the Capitals as Sandin, Jensen, Van Riemsdyk, Fehervary, and Carlson have strong defensive numbers on basically any site out there. I urge you to actually learn the game because relying on “but muh age” as Boston is top of the league with their top two centers over 35, and other such narratives is embarrassingly sad.
