2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #4: Deadline is Approaching
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>As said before if we went by your guidelines Flyers would not be TDL winners. They got a (probs late) 1st for walker at the cost of a 4m capdump whose got another year left. Thats not really selling high as they sacrificed to get a low 1st which is basically equivalent to a high 2nd anyways. Bought a 3.25m #7 Dman when they had so many many Dman already. And traded borderline for borderline player. That dont scream win
That like TOR, NYR and others screams middle of the ground. There's no need to always have roster turnover at the TDL nor go after the big flashy toy to win it all. Blues and VGK won cups with a single trade at the TDL (Barbashev and Zotto). Meanwhile last year BOS went all in and lost in 7 despite adding Orlov, Hathaway and Bertuzzi
I the end as mentioned earlier everyone entitled to an opinion even if when using the guidelines be incorrect</div></div>
I guess i'm just kinda confused on what you think my guidlines are? I'd expect a team with stars to go out and help their stars before there stars are 35 and cupless. Probably because I watched Hextall waste the primes of Giroux and Voracek's careers.
I'd expect a team without stars, and has overperformed all year (Flyers), too trade guys who aren't gonna be important in 3 years, having a career year, and are valued higher than they've ever been before.
1. Walkers aggregate value was likely around a mid 2nd in this deal. Before the year he was a throw in a trade likely neutral valued by the GM's. They took back Johanson for purpose of making Colorado willing to part with a first. (which is smart) 2nd>nothing
2. They then bought cheap players Gurianov and EJ, because the team is overperforming and deserves some sort of help for a playoff push especially with injuries on backend to Seeler/Drysdale/Risto. It wouldn't make sense if they splurged big assets on a Guentzel or a Hertl, they aren't ready for that. They don't have the star talent Carolina, Vegas, Leafs, Or Rags have.
Not to say who they acquired is great, however they spent a 4th + a guy who couldn't make the team out of camp for players that provide more value to them then what they sent out.
3. With the 1st acquired, and not committing a lot of cap space to player long term, they're now in a lot better position to add a young core player via the draft or trade -- someone who could make an impact during the Michkov era.

EASports Realistic Trades I Would Do If I Was Flames GM
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J2W</b></div><div>Dach was absolutely rushed into the NHL, and now after a few years he's looking like a solid 2nd line player moving forward with time to improve. Pelletier is a good prospect but given they're the same age it's a stupid move for MTL to swap them.
I'm doubtful Ruzicka would make much difference in Mesar and Slafkovsky's development, and I wouldn't trade Farrell for that gamble at this point.
Huberdeau hasn't really done anything to command respect in MTL's locker room at this point. He's on pace for less than 60 points and has been out of the 1st round once. If he bounces back and plays like a star again, sure, he'll command some respect but right now he's an overpaid Veteran with almost no playoff success in the NHL. I think playoff success likely commands a solid amount of respect on it's own and MTL has guys that have gone deep. Again, it's not worth the risk of that contract when they are out of Anderson's 4 years sooner and have an extra 5M to use in the meantime on a guy like Dubois if he hits free agency.</div></div>
Completely makes sense. I appreciate your input

2022-23 NHL Season Discussion Thread #6: No More Summer of Dorion
Jesus. I had the energy to debate with Habs fans about Chiarot of his very inflated value, which was true, he got traded for way too much, and the other participant regretted it soon after.
No doubt same is going to happen with Anderson. Some fool is going to trade a haul for him, and regret it soon after. I'm tired of discussing the whole topic. Only reason why these players gather out such a massive debate is because they happen to play for the Montreal Canadiens.
My opinion on Anderson is this - Should Anderson ever return more than a 3rd round pick, similar to Chiarot, at least stats wise, were it basic or advanced, there's absolutely zero justification for it. Anderson might have some decent attributes that interest GMs, such as his size and speed, but as an overall player he comes up way too short when compared to his salary. I mean I could be the best cake mixer in the world, but that talent would be of little use if I can't f*cking bake the rest of the cake. This metaphor describes Anderson to me quite well.
He is probably the first 30-35 point player who earns a staggering $5,5M, and still considered a high value asset.
And yet, despite all that, should Anderson get traded, there's no doubt in my mind it will be for a haul involving a first round pick, a prospect, and probably a cap dump of some kind. Otherwise MTL won't even move him, and to me it seems like fans would remain happy if that was the case, because for some reason they like him.
To me, there's two things getting mixed up in this discussion by the most active debators of this whole issue
- what is he actually worth in return
- what will he actually get in return
These two things are COMPLETELY different.

Speculation will not be tolerated. I do want to reiterate though: the conversations surrounding what is happening with Hockey Canada are absolutely vital to changing the culture of this sport. We cannot affect change without having these difficult conversations. Please conduct yourselves with all respect, tact, and understanding in the wake of the news surrounding Canada's WJC teams, the Daryl Katz case, or any other future cases that fall under similar categories.
Be mindful of the trauma that this news can dredge up and how others may react to updates in each individual case. Links are provided in the stickied post should you or someone you know need the assistance. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness.

An Announcement Regarding Hockey Canada
I'll sticky this in the wake of the 2003 WJC team also being named in the ongoing cases re: sexual assault AND the civil case against Daryl Katz.
<strong>Any speculation as to who is/isn't guilty of SA will result in an immediate Level 1 infraction. Repeat offenders will be at risk of having their accounts permanently banned</strong>. It is not our place here at CapFriendly to lay blame at the feet of others: that burden is up to the Canadian justice system.
I want to reiterate on behalf of everyone at CapFriendly that having the awkward, necessary conversations about the toxicity associated with hockey, and the consequences of the culture this sport has nourished over its current lifetime, is encouraged. These conversations are one of a very few mechanisms that we as fans and we as the public have in forcing change. Please conduct yourselves with the utmost of respect for others and the sensitivities this topic raises.

If Edmundson is the issue though fine, he could easily be traded somewhere else for actual assets.</div></div>
If it wasn't 11OA and instead a late 1st I'd agree. Seems like terrible asset management otherwise by making a bad situation worse. Like, OK you reduced the cap hit down the line but you may have just missed out on a top 6 O or top 4 D that will provide more benefit over more years than the buyout. E.g. Meier was 9OA, so was Couture, Hertl was 17OA. SJ has been pretty good picking at this range.
And to be fair to you there are SJ fans ACGMs sending pickles away with the 1st... but it gives me serious heartburn

Curious About this Trade Down Caps Fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J2W</b></div><div>So because a non-playoff team wouldn't pay a certain price for a player, their value in a trade with a playoff team should be less? Weird argument but fair enough. Dvorak's value based on middle 6C being traded in the past would be late 1st early 2nd, or a similar value of roster players/prospects. Just last draft we saw pick 20 traded for 22 and 90, the extra 4 spots don't equal moving from pick 90 to around pick 30-40's value. We also saw that moving up 7 spots to 15 cost 23 48 and 138, which is also less than Dvorak plus 26 and it moved them more spots and to a more valuable pick. <strong>Maybe Dvorak and MTL 2nd (33) for WSH 1st (20) WSH 3rd (85)</strong>, I don't know though, MTL would need to be pretty high on someone at 20 and be positive they wouldn't slip to 26.</div></div>
After reading the responses to both of my posts, I think you're really onto something <strong>there</strong>.
The reason I chose Arizona and Buffalo is because cap concerns come into the picture with playoff teams who, with the exception of Washington for the premise reason, are close to the cap and also usually don't need a quality center.
Thanks for the intelligent reply.

2021-22 NHL Off-season Discussion Thread - #1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J2W</b></div><div>I'm relatively certain that the first draw is for 1OA, or moving up ten spots, the 2nd draw is for 2OA or moving up 10 spots. If 12th won the 1st draw and moved up to 2OA, the 2nd draw is still technically for 2OA, but 12th gets priority on that pick due to winning the 1st draw, making the draw for 3OA in reality. So if 13th won the 1st draw and moved up to 3rd, and then 12th won the 2nd draw, 12th would move up to 2nd, 13th would pick 3rd and the Coyotes would pick 4th. I'd assume that MTL will be removed from the lottery if 12th or lower wins the 1st draw since they would be locked into 1OA.</div></div>
Thank you for this. I understand the system completely now, I think.

Why would Montreal ever think of trading Denault for futures? Playoff contenders don't trade upcoming UFAs, if anything they try to acquire UFA from. non contenders for a playoff run.
It's kind of a CapFriendly obsession.....you can't let UFA walk. Well generally there are 3 UFAs per team, and virtually all of them "walk".

Not a Habs fan, but they already have three top-6 centers and one other coming. If anything, they could trade one of Domi or Kotkaniemi. They have three top-6 wingers and they need another one. Domi played this season with Weal, which isn't great. I think that they only have two prospects on the wing. I'm pretty sure they'd prefer to keep Tatar than trade him for a not needed player. And then there is Juulsen, a prospect on a position (RHD) where their NHL players are above 30. If anything, both teams don't match well for a trade.

I finally understand LTIR
Get your PHD out folks. This is my understanding of LTIR cap. But this is the most basic explanation. Not many people in hockey media or fans fully understand it.
putting any player on LTIR does not get rid of the player’s cap hit, the cap hit remains through the sesaon.LTIR may allow the team to go over the upper cap limit by a certain amount. 10% during the offseason. The amount a team can go over the upper cap limit depends on the team’s cap hit at the time the player is placed on LTIR and how close they are the upper salary cap limit. Example is the leafs were 11000$ under the cap on day 1 of last season including the Clarkson and Horton deals which allowed them do maximize the upper limit of cap relief. Teams needs to be cap compliant on day 1 of the regular season and the best case for a team like the Leafs is to be as close to the cap as possible on day 1 of the regular season and then place the player on LTIR. The team will be allowed to go over the cap by the amount of the cap hit of the player placed on LTIR minus the amount of cap space they had prior to the LTIR assignment.

You are quite far off, LTIR doesnt adjust the cap. It is essentially money subtractwd from your current cap hit. However you have to look into more detail the the LTIRd contract. For example, if Marner were to go on LTIR the leafs would only get 700k in actual contract relief and 15M in bonua relief. Yes they are 2 different things.
Lets say a player with a 5M contract goes on LTIR and you are 1M below the cap, yoy dont get 6M cap space to work with now, you get about 4M. LTIR cap space is calculated by this: total cap (with LTIR players included) - league cap.
Also technically you count as being over the cap when using LTIR so you cant acrue cap space as the season progresses

Sujet:
I finally understand LTIR
It's not as simple as that. The cap doesn't change, and Toronto would be allowed some relief, but they're not just allowed to go over the cap by Kesler's contract value.
Toronto is allowed to replace the injured player on LTIR with another contract and receive cap relief. The cap relief is calculated each day. So let's say on day 1 of the season, Toronto was $2M over the cap with Kesler's contract on the books. So they divide that $2M by 186 days (or however many days there are in that particular season). In this example, the Leafs would receive $10,752 in cap relief for that day that they could bank and use later in the season.
As the season progresses, the amount of daily LTIR relief earned increases, adding usable cap space to the team's allowance. Halfway through the season, the team would have received $1M of cap relief. For this reason, it's preferable for teams to be as close to the cap as possible before they place a player on LTIR. That's why the team traded for David Clarkson's contract last summer when it was apparent that they might have to deal with a Marner holdout. They expected to be able to fit his new AAV under the cap using LTIR, but they weren't going to be able to afford a pro-rated cap hit for players that hold out into the season (like the situation was with Nylander). By adding Horton, they maximized the amount of LTIR relief they received, even without Marner's hefty contracts on the books.
A lot of people think that LTIR is just free cap space. It's not. It's much more complex than that and can cause issues if you don't fully understand how it works.
