Description
Romanov deal loosely based off Pesce's contract, same term but slightly less AAV since Pesce had better numbers at the time. Would be around 3.25 but caps gone up.
Pitlick was good, but has a small sample size so it's a reasonable cheap deal for a guy who should put up 40-45 points to help MTL through a rough patch with the cap, while the low term gets him to UFA and a better payday if he can put up decent numbers in a full season.
Schueneman was decent in limited games but it was a small sample size and he's 26, what you see is what you get. Above league minimum but can still be completely buried if necessary.
EDM trade is if Kane doesn't end up back in EDM, I could see them over paying for Anderson as an alternative, big, can skate, decent goal scoring ability. Definitely wouldn't be the same as having Kane but it's not hard to see EDM hoping to get the same results. Would obviously require some cap moved by EDM, but so would Kane so I'm not worried about it. Doesn't need to be a 1st round pick, just similar value.
Pens trade is if Letang does leave and they can't get Klingberg. They shouldn't be buying but I doubt they want to waste whatever time Crosby has left. Like with the EDM deal it doesn't need to be a 1st round pick, it just needs to be a package with similar value.
Hughes has reportedly called teams to see what it would take to move in the top 10 at the draft, although I think it's likely more to give the fans something to be hyped about and get them excited going forward rather than he see's someone in that range as a must have prospect. Apparently Sharks ownership wants to be competitive so I doubt they'll be willing to ride out the Vlasic contract, which is probably the worst value they have. The Sharks pick at 11 doesn't have quite the same wow factor as saying 'we acquired a top 10 pick', but it would still be fun for the fans. Vlasic isn't worth 7M, he isn't even worth the 5.5M after the retention but MTL should have an influx of guys on ELC's over the next 5 or so years as the guys they pick up during the rebuild start maturing into NHLer's so his 4 year deal should be manageable, but it will cost the Sharks.
Mrazek for Allen swap gives MTL another 1st in the next few years and a warm body incase Price gets hurt, while the Leafs save almost 2.5M on a backup this season, and get out of Mrazeks 3.8 next season.

Leafs have no leverage in any trade unfortunately, it will cost a first and a top end prospect to get rid of Mrazek. Leafs can't afford to buy him out without taking a huge cap penalty

If MTL were to trade Allen with 50% retention it would likely be for a 2nd, so dumping Mrazek is the difference between the 2nd and a late 1st, I even went with the 2024 pick because it should be later than than this years.

Their saving 2M in years 1 and 2, while getting a LD to replace Vlasic who is actually worth his deal, and their saving 5.5M in years 3 and 4, if you don't think that's worth a 1st you might need to revisit the value of cap relief moves in recent years. If Edmundson is the issue though fine, he could easily be traded somewhere else for actual assets.

A buyout saves them money every year and doesn’t cost them a 1st to do.

In the last 3 seasons Adin Hill, Vitek Vanacek (maybe Caps saw him as a starter over Samsonov?), Robin Lehner, and ,depending on what your opinion on Matt Murray was at the time of the trade, him as well. Now they are younger, but they all either made more or were due raises which will have them making more than Allen half retained. Add on to the fact that it has happened recently, MTL has major uncertainty in net due to Prices health and Allen is the only guy in the system who will likely be able to handle the work load if Price can't play. Mrazek isn't a guy I'd want taking the workload, even in a rebuilding year, but having him take some of it and hoping someone steps up is an acceptable option, for the right return.

A buyout saves them 1.5M less over the 4 years of Vlasic's deal, and adds 4 years of cap hit, plus the cost of a replacement player makes that even less in years 1 and 2 even at league minimum the makes it about 3M less in savings over the first 4 years.

They probably should, but I've seen it reported that the owner wants them to compete for a playoff spot, so the extra years of dead cap from a buyout might not be an option.

Gives them cap space and keeps assets, idk why they wouldn’t do it and trade away a 1st instead. Yeah it adds 4 years of cap hit but overall all years are greatly less than the $7 mil a year. It gives them flexibility to bring in an actual hockey player and not a pylon

If it wasn't 11OA and instead a late 1st I'd agree. Seems like terrible asset management otherwise by making a bad situation worse. Like, OK you reduced the cap hit down the line but you may have just missed out on a top 6 O or top 4 D that will provide more benefit over more years than the buyout. E.g. Meier was 9OA, so was Couture, Hertl was 17OA. SJ has been pretty good picking at this range.

And to be fair to you there are SJ fans ACGMs sending pickles away with the 1st... but it gives me serious heartburn

I agree, it's probably not the best move from a hockey stand point, but on the business side it's been reported that SJ's ownership wants the team to be competitive, not to rebuild. Most likely you're looking at 2-4 seasons before whoever they take at 11OA is making an impact in the NHL. So depending on how bullish ownership is about making playoffs shipping out Vlasic and getting an appropriately priced replacement for a few seasons might be high on the next GM's priority list.
