Are we talking about Jack Hughes? Wouldn’t say he has the best contract in the league, not even close. He had a good 40 games and somehow got 8x8. Even Quinn got less than that and he was way better when he signed his contract. Obviously with the cap going up, it could end up as a steal but they better hope he continues to be as good as he was for 40 games this season

Exactly. Hot take here, Jack Hughes is high on the list of overrated players. He’s not bad at all but he’s not like a top 5 centre or anything, nor is there any guarantee that he will ever be.

I don’t think anyone is saying Jack Hughes is a top 5 centre. I personally don’t even think he ever will be, although I think he’ll probably be top 10 (McDavid, Matthews, Bedard, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Crosby, Point, Aho, etc. will keep him out of the top 5 both now and in the future, he might pass some of those, but probably not 5). But he has already surpassed the expectations of his contract imo (elite production AND underlying numbers), and will likely outperform it for its entire duration. He’ll be a great 1C for a long time. This 8mil is the new 6.3mil that MacKinnon signed. Obviously I think MacKinnon is better than I expect Hughes to ever be, but it’ll be looked at similarly a few years down the line.
