Helping teams to help ourselves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>I don’t agree with your assessment.
1st. While Sturm is what he is (9-13G 20-35P) he is also fast hood skater well above average face off guy and one of the best PK guys in the league, to me he is clearly better than Ellers and will be even more so next year. (Sharks suck so you gotta use the eye test not the numbers!)
And Benning is a big upgrade. But if you guy pass that’s not an issue as another team would jump on this! RD and depth C who are both good on PK are always people of interest to clubs.</div></div>
You may not agree with my assessment and that's perfectly fine, however as I mentioned I haven't watched any Sharks games and probably will only watch 2 of their games all year. That being said I still see Sturm and Eller as similar in production levels throughout their careers and think that moving Eller would end up hurting more than helping unless he is moved for a more scoring option that still brings a defensive side to their game. I do not see Sturm being an option for that.
I wouldn't mind acquiring Benning and would be open to doing a swap of Ruhwedel for him and say add a 3rd/4th round pick to the deal.
I do not think it is necessary for the Pens to give up their only really depth scoring option and get back a player who does not shoot the puck (which would only add to Pens depth problems of not having any scoring). Especially when I have seen Calgary posts sending Dube to the Pens which imo is more upside than trading for a guy like Sturm

Helping teams to help ourselves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>I mean when you're looking at a 3rd/4th line role, Sturm fits that mold MUCH better. Sturm is a high energy player, great on the forecheck, ELITE penalty killer. He doesn't have that offensive upside that Eller does but I don't think Pitt is really looking for that right now. Also slightly better cap hit and the age is more of a factor for next year. You can reliably count on Sturm being the same player next year, whereas at 34 Eller could really drop off next year</div></div>
I'll keep it real I really haven't watched Sturm enough to know what his fit would look like, however what I have watched of Eller on the 3rd line for the Pens would not be easily replaceable in terms of chemistry. The way him, Big Z, and O'Connor work together has made them into a line that can be trusted in all situations defensively and offensively. My fear would be you lose the offensive side when you add in Sturm. Additionally, you would lose Ellers presence in the locker room which he appears to be in a leadership role (in terms of pecking order probably 5th behind Sid, Geno, Tanger, and Karlsson).
As far as next year I even stated in my original Sturm is a few years younger, but isn't really a prospect level talent isn't really developing anymore, so what you have to look at is what is the likelihood someone like Eller falls off tremendously. Which given Eller's style of play (which isn't really physical and has never been the best skater on any team) I wouldn't expect him to fall off as rapidly as someone who posses that physical or speed game.
The slightly better cap hit you're looking at 450K difference which isn't even league minimum.
All of this I still feel like no need to make the move for Sturm at least with Eller as the piece returning to the Sharks.
The only possible move I see that would vastly improve Penguins situation is finding a way to not dress 77 night in and night out and addressing the 3rd pair defense.

I honestly don't feel like Sturm is an upgrade over Eller.
In looking it seems that are somewhat same kind of level of production around 30ish points at their peak. Yes Sturm maybe a couple years younger, but in looking at how Eller is currently playing as 3C for the Pens I am not sure that I would want to break up that chemistry because at times the 3rd line has seemed like the best line and can be thrown out into an situation.
Benning would definitely be an upgrade to Ruh..... but would it really be worth a 2nd that Im not sure of especially when there could possibly be better options available for that package .
Based off that I would say Pens decline mainly due to Eller, and could possibly revisit and rework a Benning for Ruh deal with maybe a 3rd or 4th instead of a 2nd.

I have a feeling Acciari and Harkins flip flop to give the all the line combos a Righty in the forward group and then in your bottom 6 you would have 2 ppl per line who can take draws on either side which seems to be Sullys go to strategy.

For me I never once thought Nylander even deserved consideration for the spot just because he does look so pedestrian in the o zone and if you're gonna have that you better be well above average defensively which he is well far from. Dudes a career AHLer which is sad to see, but it is what he is.

My only question is how was Nylander being a non factor in anything surprising??? Since he's been drafted he's always been below point per game numbers in the AHL and isn't good defensively. Like I don't understand at all any Penguins fan who was like yeah Nylander is due for a breakout this year and deserves top 6 time. Even last year he looked pedestrian beside of Malkin and Zucker.
For the record not saying you were one of those people, but I saw plenty of them throughout the off season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mr_Gardoki</b></div><div>Yeah, if the creator checked the Pens page, he'd see when all is said and done with our current roster, we'll have zero space. Even though Kadri is overpaid by around $1Mish, I'd still love to have him. We just don't have the room or even anyone we could ship to them to free up that space. The cap is projected to go up around 3.5M to 4.5M next year and most of that likely goes to Jake's extension. We'll have Carter's contract freeing up a little, but not enough to fit Kadri.
Great trade in terms of value for the Pens though. Not so much for CGY lol</div></div>
No doubt Calgary loses this particular deal. In looking as to what would free up the space in order for this to work 1/2 players would probably be shipped somewhere from the Pens.
A) Jake, as mentioned the move would create issues in extending Jake and with his current hit it would free up close to the necessary space to bring in Naz...... Don't forsee this as 87 and 59 have a lot of chem and I have a feeling 87 has enough pull to keep Jake a Penguin.
B) Raks, trading Raks would free up 5/7 mil necessary to bring in Naz....... don't think this move happens either as Raks is 1/2 RHS forwards that has above average shooting capabilities on the roster exchanging him for Kadri would add yet another LHS forward in which our top 6 would 5 LHS and 1 RHS which I dont think is a recipe for success

Dont get me wrong I love me some Nazem Kadri, and I think he would bring the right blend of skill and grit to a Penguins lineup that does not have that type of player and has had major success with a player of that type of skill (think Kadri is a much better Hornqvist type player), however in order to fully endorse this move I would need to know the follow up moves that would be required in order to get cap compliant.

Dubas hasn't waited a year....... Like if you look at what he did he made the team vastly better than what they were even last year at this time which is impressive in that he only really had to give a 1st and a 2nd to do so......... The Penguins do not need a reunion with Ian Cole who is an aging defenseman who will only log jam LHD especially at his 3+ mil youre basically trading Carter for Carter but on defense

Penguins say no giving up too much in value with both Poulin and Smith in the return for Cole (34 DFD on the decline at 3x1). While Carter is definitely an albatross he comes off the books after the year anyway so even if Poulin and Smith are both B to C level Potential they are both at least early 20s players no need to give up both for an aging 3LD when we already have 4 NHL LHD on the roster

So for like what seems to be the 100th time. Sullivan says no to Lafferty. Pens had Lafferty back in 2019-2021 when he was with us Sully played him on average 9:00 per game (4th line time). Why? Because Lafferty does not play the game the way Sullivan likes his bottom 6 players to play.
Dubas unlike the last regime is actually taking what the coach is asking for for his team into consideration.
With that being said Pens decline

Wildcard type Team Now -TO- Legit Playoff Team
I highly doubt any team accepts these deals as they heavily favor the Penguins..... Unfortunately I don't believe the Pens have the capitol necessary to even out the value on all three. They probably have enough assets to make 1 of the 2 FWD trades work.
However, IMO I wouldn't do either. While both of the potential targets you have chosen to trade for are young and would give the Pens something they don't have and could definitely use I don't forsee management making the necessary adjustments to the trades to acquire either one. In order to acquire this they will cost assets.
Seeing how Dorion throws around money I wouldn't be surprised if the Sens make a cap dump trade sign Pinto to 1 year around the 2.250 mil mark and then extend him for a much higher AAV afterwards for the following season when cap rises. In order to obtain since Ottawa really does not have to move him and he can't be offer sheeted cause he is a 10.2 RFA its going to cost a first and A-B level prospect who is NHL ready. The only first the Pens have that they can actually trade '26 first. It would not be smart to move that pick as that is when you are really going to have to start adding to your prospect pool as at that point Sid Geno and Tanger will be approaching 40 (I would believe out of the 3 the retirement order will be Geno, Sid, and Tanger). The only seemingly close to NHL ready prospect the Pens have is Poulin and he's a B- prospect at best. Rules out acquiring Pinto.
Tomasino a 22 year old winger who is putting .5 pts/gm at the NHL level is not going to be traded for a D- prospect in Nylander and C- prospect in Smith. A more realistic approach to acquiring someone with Tomasino's potential is again a 1st or a similar style prospect (which if you have why trade in the first place). If there was a trade to pull the trigger on in which the '26 first was used I wouldn't hate it as much if they used it to acquire a player like Tomasino. However, it would look more like: Tomasino to PIT Nylander to NSH 2026 1st to NSH and one of the 2024 7ths to NSH. In order to get to closer value. Again though I do not believe that Nashville is required to make this move as a player like Tomasino allows new GM Trotz the option to retool instead of full blown rebuild. Still think Nashville would say no.
Buffalo has no need to move Comrie other than he is waiver eligible. However, they could send one of their fwds who don't have to clear waivers down and carry 3 goalies wouldn't be the worst option as bot UPL and Levi are extremely young with minimal NHL experience.
The Pens are not in a terrible spot while I think current construction is at best a wild card team there are options that do not cost assets that are available to acquire at the cost of just cap space that I think will be the route that Dubas and co. take.

Adding a former top 5 pick
I like the thought of signing Puljujarvi. I think it would be a relatively low risk high reward situation, only thing I would do is sign him to a multi year deal since he is coming off double hip surgery (had a friend who played hockey have this surgery at roughly same age and he says he wishes he did it 5 years earlier cause he feels amazing now with full ROM and no limitations), but signing a multi year deal gives him time to completely recover and not rush back (to my knowledge he just has to be on payroll prior to TDL in order to be playoff eligible).

If the Pens were going to trade Puustinen I don't think it would be for a 32 YO 3rd pair at best RHD. As for the other trade I also don't think the Pens would load up and have all OFD on the Right side. While I liked Addison and hated to see him go as at the time he was the only prospect the Pens had that was close to NHL readiness I do not believe a reunion is likely while 58 and 65 are on the Pens.

The only thing I might do different is if this trade happens leading up to or at the draft making it the '24 2nd instead of the '26 (Mainly as '26 draft pick could actually become serviceable in the post 87 71 era the '24 less likely to be a difference maker and can be utilized to maximize window)

Just looked if Pens did and signed Jake to 8x8 for next year and then are able to get RFAs signed around the 1 mil mark besides the traded Hallander they would have roughly 1.675 mil to spend on a 3RHD for next season and then add in AHL depth signings
