Nope, Huberdeau wasn't notificated of the trade. He was "blindsided" by the trade and i imagine Weager was too. Imagine how much better off the Flames would have been if they traded one year of Tkachuk, for one year of Huberdeau, Weager, traded those two players for futures, hand the first and had 17.5m this summer
You're just trying to make argument that doesn't exist. Teams trades, and the players aren't in on the deals.
Certainly the Flames would have known the approximate going rate for Huberdeau and his new contract. Trevling made a big mistake in overpaying Huberdeau so he could justify the trade of Tkachuk.
I completely agree that often it is best to jump start a retool.
Huberdeau and Weegar would have returned a boat load having just completed a career years.
Jonathan with 30 goals, 115 pts and MacKenzie with 8 goals, 44 pts each on one year contracts of only $5,900,000 and $3,250,000 respectively.
Each could have returned as much as a first, good prospect and a young roster player.
With the extra cap space they may have been able to land several UFA's and still had the picks and prospects.
The Flames had a very unlucky last year losing 12 OT and 5 SO games, the most in the NHL.
In contrast the Jets only lost 3 such games.
Still performing a proper rebuild would have put them in a stronger position for many years.
