Overpaid team
As the runner up on the Vezina trophy, not sure I agree with Markstrom on this list. Matt Murray has a higher cap hit than Markstrom - would have been my pick.

I'd still do the deal even if they couldn't. That's good value for Monahan. While a short term downgrade to Kotkaniemi, he should replace Monahan's contributions in very short order. Plus another 1st? Sign me up. Sincerely - a Flames fan

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BurgerBoss</b></div><div>MIN declines this fairly easily...</div></div>
I disagree... thought I was being fairly generous with that offer. Gawdin will play in this league next year and has around a 40 NHLE. A 1st and a 2nd plus Hamonic who can be flipped or signed while Minny goes through rebuild (wants to live close to Manitoba where his family is)

I can and I will lol. I get the sentiment. I'm hoping that the idea here is TO might miss playoffs without solid D and don't get full value offers. Brodie is that left shot they need, but plays the right side - so could be useful long-term for the Buds. Toronto also tried trading for him once already - Dubas knows the value Brodie can bring. He won't re-sign with the Flames - I think he wants to go back home.

?? Brodie is the best skating Flames defenseman and 2nd best overall, although Andersson is pushing into that conversation (I watch the Flames a lot). He struggled a bit last year and early this year at times with turnovers but has had a re-surgence since his on-ice collapse. He plays a bit more high risk game but is a good top 4 defender.

Kreider to Calgary
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Braah</b></div><div>Improve our scoring? A player with literally 0 points all season and a overpaid rental for a rebuilding team?????</div></div>
How much better is Kreider than Frolik if you compare their stats over the past few years. Clearly Kreider is better, but by how much? Janko is a former 1st round pick who scored 7 shorthanded goals last year and is a great pk'er who needs a change of scenery after his name came up in a failed trade for Kadri. Zavgorodny has an NHLE of 43 scoring 2 points per game in the CHL and is a top prospect for the Flames. Plus the pick upgrade. Kreider is 8th in NYR scoring... is he worth even that much more than Frolik? I'm honestly asking as maybe there's something there more than his 14 points that ups his value. If so, I'd change the 3rd to a 2nd and you can keep the 5th?

That team is scary good and under the cap. Nice work! Backlund would have been a great shut-down center option in your bottom six as well. Karlsson doesn't quite have the same defensive capabilities but either option is good!

Maybe not if you add up all the points... but you can't compare D-men to forwards by points. Hanifin is a 22 year old top 4 D locked in with term under $5 mil with over 300 games of NHL experience. That's worth something

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BlueSeeker</b></div><div>The condition of the pick should be if JP gets 35 points the pick becomes a second rounder(take out the clause for the pick becoming a 1st rounder because that sh*t aint happening). If I were the Flames heading into their window of contention, I think they would be willing to pay a 1st for a 6'4" 21 yr old right shot, right winger heading into his prime who just scored 40 points for the team, non? I can't see that condition being met, but if it was you'd be happy to pay I think. Frolik has value... for a year then he's UFA.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>switch the 3rd to the other side and take off the retention, Fro >> Poolparty</div></div>
I don't know... EDM doesn't have the cap to take all of Fro's salary. I agree Fro is greater than Pool right now... CGY is paying for potential and team control of a young top 5 pick who might figure it out in the right circumstances. Frolik immediately helps EDM's need for top six wingers but is over 30. That being said, Frolik was in the best shape of the entire team last year and has always tested top 2 or 3 in fitness testing for the Flames. He could play for a number of years if EDM re-signed him.

Ottawa Senators Rebuild
I think this would be a new record for the number of picks moved in one off-season by one team. WOW!
Also... as a Flames fan that is a lot of money and term for Rittich who hasn't really proved he is a starter in the league. My guess is he comes in somewhere around $3 million for 2 years on his next contract.
Why 3 goalies? And at those cap hits? That's over $14 M tied up in goal-tending, also probably the highest in the league.

2019-20 FLAMES FeatGUSEV
I don't mind the idea of going after Gusev. Although I doubt Treliving leaves that much cap space to start the year.... might as well keep Stone and Czarnik for depth in that case. Also, your roster size is only 20 which would eat up some of that cap. I think the return on Frolik is optimistic I don't think he'll bring a 2nd let alone a 3rd and a 2nd. My guess is more like a 4th round pick - although a 3rd may happen if a team really wants to add him. I think Dube makes the team.

Major trades
CGY is paying those assets to Ottawa for what could turn out to be a rental... Stone is UFA. If Stone was RFA, the ask would be much higher. Ottawa also doesn't want to tank too bad this year as they have no 1st round pick, thus three roster players going over for two the other way and two of those are very young building blocks (Bennett needs more ice time & Kylington will be a stud in this league). Think things through before rushing to judgment!
Frolik is under-utilized in Calgary because of their crazy depth and has not been one of Peters go to guys for some reason despite being used heavily by the former coach not that long ago. Frolik is a defensive specialist who can occasionally score, while Eberle is basically just an offensive specialist at this point who occasionally decides to defend. He fits better in CGY on an offensive deployed line to create some secondary scoring. NYI won't re-sign Eberle, but want to push to playoffs and want SOMETHING back for Eberle that is not just futures. Frolik at least gives them someone with more term.
The Ferly trade I'll admit is a be a bit lop-sided, but again is for a rental that is reportedly not wanting to re-sign there, thus lowers what CAR can ask and catches their GM in tough spot. Czarnik was reportedly sought out by 20 teams in free agency and gives a cash strapped franchise a cheap player for another year that again is buried by CGY's incredible depth. In an offensive role in CAR... Czarnik will likely "pop". This trade assumes CAR is out of it at the deadline.

You signed Brett Kulak but didn't put him in the line-up? Why sign Nick Holden when we already have Kulak?
Not sure I like Frolik on the top line. Management has been talking about trying to push him down to the 3rd line to make it better. I'd swap Lindholm and Frolik or even try Bennett up there first.
I do like the Rieder signing - I think he could help our third line.

Defense upgrade
That would be a bad trade for Calgary. After just moving their top right hand shot D-man in Hamilton, I can't see them taking out the 2nd pairing guy also! If any D was to be traded, they'd want an upgrade on offense coming back... not 29 year old 12 point guy Matt Martin. McBackup is not as good as Gillies OR Rittich and is actually a Calgary re-tread from years gone by. To top it off they're giving up an earlier 3rd round pick for one a year later? So when you exclude Matt Martin and McBackup (as they don't make the Flames better), Flames essentially trade Hamonic for a 2nd and a 5th... after giving up a 1st and 2 seconds for him just a year ago.

I like the way you think. I just recently posted a very similar lineup that had us trading for Mark Stone as opposed to signing Hornqvist in free agency. I see Hornqvist as a decent option if we can't get a younger, longer term asset via trade. Your RFA re-signings are spot-on in my opinion, both in terms of dollars and years.

Saw this in a comment earlier today
Are you a Habs fan? Brodie and Tkachuk? Seriously? Patch is washed up and not scoring. Beaulieu is no Brodie now and doesn't even have that much upside
Brodie is a legit top 2 d-man in this league who skates like the wind and has thrived playing top comp and big minutes for the Flames.
Tkachuck leads the Flames in Corsi, Fenwick, is playing on CGY's top shut-down line, draws penalties, mucks it up and is 4th in team scoring ALL AS AN 18 YEAR OLD. Kid is gold and might be the best Flames 1st round pick of them all. Basically... he's playing better than Pacioretty now and is only 18 with upside like crazy.
This would not be a good trade for Calgary.

Would this make sense? (Cgy)
No... I don't think it makes sense. Olli Maata is not currently, nor does he have the upside of Dougie Hamilton. If the Flames trade Hamilton, they need back... well... another Dougie Hamilton. Mark my words if he isn't already, he'll be the best Flames D-man for the next decade.
Your trades leave us with six... actually eight left shooting defencemen, Varlamov's contract is gross - I'd rather have Chad Johnson for half the price.
