CBJ need KJ's T6 potential more than they need a Cernak.

Even then, TBL would have to add. Considering they are still going to be a late-1st/low-end prospect team for a few years, not sure what kind of package they could even make avaialble.

Kings pass, not overpaying for a 4th liner. Can find one in free agency for cheaper.

I disagree, we have Sergachev back from injury, we traded for McDonagh and we have extra cap space to sign Collin Miller. Also, Lilleberg will probably be a bit better defensively with the extra year.

Right handed defensemans have a lot of value, especially someone that is still pretty young and on a long-term deal. I could probably see Tampa adding something else in the deal tho.

He isn't a top pairing defense man and that's what it would take to get Kent outta Columbus. Unless they're putting Sergachev up on the block Columbus declines anything from Tampa

They got mcdonagh to play with cernak again, he’s their best shutdown guy before him it’ll just be like last 2 years all over again

In what situation 1.3m is overpaying? Basically the same price you would pay for Kaliyev if he resign.

The Kings are already not likely to qualify Carl Grundstrom because he will be making $1.3M on his QO, and the Kings can't afford to pay him that. The Kings just don't have the cap space to bring in a bottom six guy that makes seven figures.

I like Jeannot and think he'd be a solid addition to the Kings, but he's not a good fit unless the Kings can get his cap down to around $900k, and that's only possible if Tampa is willing to retain $800k or so, which I don't think they are.

This defense would clearly be an improvement from last year, Sergachev is our best defenseman, he played 34 games last year, Dumba was terrible, we upgrade on that with Miller. We also add in McDonagh. Even if we lose Cernak, it's better. Also, depth scoring was an issue all year. By trading Cernak, we also improve that.

This defense is not better than with cernak, it doesn’t make sense to trade for a 34 yo just to trade away his 27yo d partner

We already have too many RD. If we somehow trade Severson and Boqvist, then targeting Cernak might make sense. I agree with everyone else, TB would have to add to make the trade, but without many drafts picks or great prospects, not sure what they could add that would be attractive enough to the Jackets.

I'm not saying the defense is better without him lmao, I'm saying that even without him, next year defense is gonna be better with the addition that we already made.

Yea but if they already had the plan of playing the two together to be shutdown pair I just don’t see why they’d trade him now, Id think if any major contact is being traded it’s Cirelli

CBJ need KJ's T6 potential more than they need a Cernak.

I frankly disagree. This defense's lack of shutdown capability - both on the roster and in the system - is IMO a potentially crippling flaw, and this move pretty much ends that concern immediately. One could certainly debate about whether or not it's fair value as is, but I think we badly need a Cernak and we've got more than enough potential top 6 wingers to spare KJ - even if he is particularly special as a creative playmaker.

We've got many RD, sure, but we don't have many that can handle the same kinds of responsibilities Cernak can. I think targeting him is not just sensible but downright vital.

An add would possibly be appropriate but I'm also not sure what.

Kaliyev has a QO of less than 900k and has far more upside then Jeannot ever had and we have to add to this? Jeannot has played 40 more career games then Kaliyev and only has 9 more career points, Jeannot would be a good fit on the Kings no doubt about it but any team that pays that guy more than 1m a season is overpaying him. Jeannot had one good season producing 41 points the other 3 seasons of his career he hasn't broke 20 points.

thats great, and i dont necessarily disagree, but we have no space for him. We cant just keep collecting them and wasting cap space on RDs. Trading Severson is near impossible, Jiricek needs a spot, so that just leaves the possibility of finding someone to take Gudbranson. Which the questions there are does our new FO value Gudbranson like the previous did, and if not will anyone actually trade for him.
