Do a search for MLB + Daily + Dish and find the website. They are running a contest for Baseball that's like this where you just write a 500 page essay of what you would do if you were the GM. I'm only a mild baseball fan, but still took part in it because you can win a free video game that seems pretty analytically driven, so it may be enjoyable. Just throwing this out there incase there is any multi-sport fans around here.
Asking for a younger player, who costs less, with the same visible upside as the guy you want to trade and thinking straight up or the GM with the younger player needs to add to the deal is outright ludicrous. I have seen a bunch of GMs doing this.

honestly it really just depends on, IMO, if they have any professional experience. If it's a kid in juniors or overseas I can understand. However, if a kid has made it to the NHL already you're absolutely right in most cases. The problem you are talking about is people's evaluations - and the fact that anyone over the age of 24 in this game is apparently "too old"
