Weaponzing Cap
Oilers trade is terrible. Despite what people on this site may think, Barrie has value. We have seen season after season of teams overpaying for skilled right shot offensive-defenders. Im not saying hes worth a lot but he could 100% fetch a couple mid-round picks.
Kassian on the other hand is likely a dump since hes lost his edge since signing the new contract, but he isnt that big of a dump that a 1st and savoie would be what it takes to get rid of him.

let me rephrase it then. this allows them to do other moves right now. gives them a backup who comes off the books after this season, frees up 2M-ish in cap space to all for them to add better players & gives them a 2nd which is a relatively valuable asset that they can use at the tdl.
sometimes moves, even when you’re trying to contend have to drastically improve your team. sometimes they are just pre-moves to allow for other things to take place

it frees up roughly 2M in cap space immediately with an extra 4.5M coming off at the end of the season. they also receive a second which can be used in another trade and a young/cheap depth defender incase of injuries. lastly it gets them out of Mrazeks contract which helps resign Campbell

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yycofred</b></div><div>I've asked this a lot but haven't really gotten a good answer, why would any team want to spend assets on Barrie for the next two seasons? Second assist heavy, his numbers plummet when he's not on the ice with McDavid and essentially a PP specialist at this point. His value is by far the highest it will ever be in Edmonton but it would be way lower if he were playing anywhere else.</div></div>
he is a pp specialist and his only upside is his offensive ability, you nailed it. but (despite what some may think) Barrie is and has been a very consistent and skilled offensive defender for the vast majority of his career and there are a number of teams out there who lack puck moving defenders and/or a defender to run their pp for them.
teams are not gonna pay for him to be a shutdown defender, because that’s not what he is. of they give him sheltered minutes on the third pair and run him as a pp specialist he will likely thrive. especially if it’s a place where he’s needed and put into a position to thrive

throughout his career, Barrie is 0.64ppg which is pretty darn good for somebody you describe as a “terrible offensive defender”

that’s fair, i didn’t even think about system and that you can’t just place Tyson Barrie on any team for him to succeed. i was looking at just pure numbers and (granted it’s a different team & system) Barrie would be second on the isles in points, and after Dobson the second highest scoring defender has 5 points

to be fair the team would still be under the cap of i didn’t include Kass. i just wanted to see if i could get away with including money going back in the trade

the Isles have the fewest goals in the entire league and have an incredibly mediocre PP. the trade gives them one of the leagues top offensive defenders (despite what the big brains on here say)

Also, you gave away 1st rounds like Candies, how do Oilers survive without these picks?
Also overpaid Yamamoto for bridge deal, he will get 2x2 just like Bear</div></div>
in theory yes tampa won’t get full value for their wingers, but there’ll be plenty of teams in edmonton’s position who need to upgrade their wings and it’ll start a bidding war for them.
edmonton needs to go all in now, they have a number of solid prospects developing so the team needs to upgrade now to take full advantage of their cup winning window with McDavid and Draisaitl in their primes.
better to overpay in mock teams than underpay

no chance edmonton does that trade. typically when teams such as tampa need to clear cap they don’t get full price for their players. even then I don’t see edmonton giving up their top prospect and and 1st for palat
