Description
I know I'm gonna get roasted here.

Habs fans will say:

-This is too much for Marner
-We can just wait a year and get him for free
-Marner is not the player we need because he's "not a playoff performer" (which is nonsense by the way)

Leafs fans will say:

-This is not enough for Marner
-The Leafs would never trade Marner to a division rival
-Marner would never want to play in Montreal

So I actually think Marner is exactly what the Habs need.

1) He's a natural RW, which is actually fairly rare to find on the market
2) He's a 90+ point prime-aged player which almost never becomes available
3) Gorton is looking for a Panarin equivalent, and this is the closest thing to it

The Habs will have ZERO chance of landing him in Free Agency. The only hope they have is to make a big splash with a sign & trade and show him how badly they want him.

Marner is supremely talented and cerebral. He will get exactly what MSL is trying to do and he will execute it perfectly. I honestly can't think of a better MSL player than Marner.

Habs only do this deal if Marner agrees to a sign & trade in the neighborhood of 11 x 7.

Yes the return is high, but how many 6OA picks turn into a player like Marner, and how many years will it take them to get there?

As for the Leafs, they need to move some cap so they can retool their D-core. They will move Tavares out as well and land a few free agents like Pesce. The Leafs don't need Marner as much as the Habs do.

This deal can make both teams better.
Transactions
MTL
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Détails additionnels:
See description above...

Signs an 11 x 7 extension as a parameter of the deal
TOR
  1. Mesar, Filip
  2. Struble, Jayden
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (MTL)
Détails additionnels:
6 OA 2024 (44% chance at least, this is post lottery)

Struble is a bottom pair stay at home defender, exactly the kind of player the Leafs will need

Mesar if he meets his potential, can maybe be a version of Marner who scores 50 points a season. He's a project.

A bottom pair defender and a prospect that maybe could be a 60 point player and a 1st for a 100 point Selke finalist. Yeah Hab fans will freak out because this isn't bad enough for TO and Leaf fans will be unhappy because this is terrible

Marner would be waiving his NMC to go somewhere with less pressure. Montreal is not that.

Also the Habs are drafting 5th OA, why would they trade that, and more for 1 year of Marner

May need to remove Mesar, since he'll be of no value for the Leafs, add another key piece like Mailloux or Harris, even Matheson for that deal to go through.

They'll want to up their Defensive line, so Struble & Matheson, or Struble & Harris, or Struble & Mailloux plus that MTL 1st would be a better trade off for them. Even then, Toronto fans will want Reinbacher, Ghule or Hutson (who'll do nothing for them since he's not a defensive blue liner and not a big guy either), but Reinbacher and Ghule are the HABS franchise's future not key pieces.

I'd even add MIN (2024) round 3 and Pitts (2025) round 2 picks to give them more to the pot.

In essence, like you said most Leafs fan will spit on this and most Habs fans won't see the need Habs have for a top 3 offensive forward like Marner.

Honestly and I know leaf fans will freak….marner is an incredible player but he just can’t bring it in playoffs.

The 6th overall pick is too much to give up for him

There is a better chance the pick ends up 6OA than 5OA. 44% chance it's 6OA.

Mesar could be an interesting forward for a team divesting from their top heavy forward group to be a more balanced team. Like I said, he's a project.

How many PPGs does an offensive player like Marner need to have to be seen to "bring it". Because he's over 1.0 PPGs the last 3 seasons. How many players do more than that?

The Leafs are flawed, but one player like Marner does not make the Habs flawed. 4 players would...

If you want to crap on the offer, can you at least make a cohesive argument?

1) Top 8 picks almost NEVER move and obviously have more value than "a 1st". Your disregard for it makes your argument seem small.
2) Marner has never been a 100+ point player even once in a regular season. I said he's a 90-100 point player which is what I see him as even though he did not hit 90 points this season.

Marner would have been a first overall pick in a lot of years. Just happened to be drafted the same here as McDavid. So a top 8 pick doesn't equal him. And does nothing for a win now team. You know all this. This is a troll post.

Have you EVER seen a troll post this long? Have I ever written a troll post?

I truly believe the Leafs will move on from Marner this offseason.

You may hate my post if you wish, but I promise I am not trolling.

Adding to my previous point:

A 6OA pick, a former 1st entering his D+3 season who is looking like he will become a top 6 player in the NHL, and a former 2nd who has established himself as an NHL defender at age 22. That's hardly a crappy offer...

You hope they do and you hope they trade him to Montreal for scraps and a 1st that won't equal Marner ever.

Interesting offer, but I think two top 5-6 picks is too much, even for Marner.

The defenseman you could choose 6OA this season will be your top defender in 3 years.

Alternatively, would you consider removing the 6OA and adding Reinbacher? I doubt the Habs do that, but just wondering if a "sure thing" makes the existing offer more palatable?

What if Toronto's 1rst is attached to Marner?

That way MTL still has 2 1rsts, Marner which helps their forward pool of players...

Look at the number of Marner trades on this site and no one acts like he's a franchise player. We are talking about a guy who scored at a 100 point pace for the past 4 seasons and is a Selke finalist. He's not just some offensive winger. He's an elite talent. He would immediately become the best player in Montreal but a wide margin and you want him for 2 nothing pieces and a first in a weak draft. This does not help TO win now, you know this. And pretending it isn't the case doesn't make you look good.

None of that has anything to do with the fact that YOU made this personal and attacked me personally, not my post. I did not make this post in "bad faith" to piss anyone off. Claiming I did was a mischaracterization and you should apologize, or at the very least, admit it.

I feel Reinbacher is ahead of Mesar and has a lot more upside, but I'm optimistic on him and see Reinbacher as netting out as somewhere between Seider & Josi.
