Value might be there but Habs likely keep 4th-7th ova vs trading it + 2nd + 3rd for Zegras

If we're looking to sell, that could get it done. While it makes sense for MTL to acquire Zegras, it doesn't make sense for Anaheim to sell Zegras.

This comparison doesn't work. Ottawa had to trade DeBrincat and he only wanted to go to Detroit.

Honestly from the outside it definitely looks like they’re trying to build completely around their younger core vs guys from 2019 like Zegras.

This is not based on the Detroit trade (they basically got Debrincat for free). This is based on what Chicago got from Ottawa.

This is fair value IF Trevor Zegras is on the market, which I doubt. If Anaheim would accept pure futures, this should get it done.

Very fair evaluation. Thanks.

I don’t think they’ll care very much about adding extra picks, though personally I’d only do this if we could use other assets to trade back into top 10-15 to still draft a premium forward.

I think Habs management really, really really want Iginla to compete a 2nd line of Roy-Dach -Iginla in 2 years time. Combine that with Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky and that a really strong top 6

I don't recall ever seeing any indication that Habs management has interest in Zegras, it's mostly a fan thing. Personally, I'm not interested.

Basing a trade on the Debrincat deal is pretty dumb considering Debrincat was seemingly only willing to sign in Detroit…

Even more strange when you say you’re basing it on the Debrincat deal but giving up a Top 10 pick. The pick Detroit gave will be mid 20s or later.

Thats not the most recent debrincat trade and realistically hes closer in value to the detroit trade than the ottawa one

Zegras just turned 23, he IS part of the younger core. We just locked up Terry long term, he's the "old guy" of the core at 26. It makes zero sense to reset the clock on Zegras from our side.

23 or under list
Zegras 23
McTavish 21
Carlson 19
Mintyukov 20
Zellweger 20
LaCombe 23
Gauthier 20
Dostal 23

And this is to say nothing of the 24-26 year olds that are on the roster too

No, he's not, the reason Ottawa got shafted on value was that he had a 9 million dollar QO, refused to sign with Ottawa for term, and gave a VERY short list he would sign longer than his QO, Otyawas hands were tied, and they got a significantly depressed return. Those factors aren't in play with Zegras.

Ducks fan response...

Four 1st Rd picks required or no trade.

On a serious take.

Trade comparable I would say is Fiala.

He was a young star player on a bridge deal with RFA ending. Just like Zegras.

He was traded for a 1st Rd pick and a top prospect Dman, Faber. Who has turned into a legit top 4 RHD in the NHL.

So Mailloux and a 1st Rd pick.

And again, missing context of the Fiala trade, which is that Minnesota couldnt afford to keep him, so they traded him for the best they could get, this is not a situation that is applicable to Anaheim or Zegras.

Secondly, none of us are asking for four firsts, we have been rejecting every proposal from HABS fans that have four firsts, because we don't want a grab bag of middle of the lineup assets, we already have those, IF we were to trade Zegras, it would be a long the lines of the Gauthier-Drysdale and Mittlestadt-Byram deals, a blue chip asset as the base of the deal, which would be Reinbacher, or MTLs 1st this year.

Then the Ducks keep Zegras until the point his trade value drops and they must take a lower trade value, because NO team is meeting the Duck fans or Verbeek's asking price.

It'll be just like Debrincat trade all over again. Have a high asking price and watch the trade value drop until the team trading him just gives up and takes the lower value than they could have gotten a year earlier.
