To be completely honest I’d be willing to give up A LOT for him (i think he’s exactly what we need) , but I also think it’s crazy to not believe he’s being offered up with all the history.😂

I honestly just can’t wait until zegras is traded and all the Anaheim fans are left shocked after spending months saying “he’s not on the trading block”

If the guy we want drops I happily include Matheson or Guhle instead. We don’t need both. I prefer to give up Matheson but if the Habs are obsessed with keeping him might as well trade Guhle now for a premium player.

Habs management dream scenario

Yeah and to just add on they’ve *never* said that they want to contend immediately just that they want to *improve*. I think they’re well aware that their window opens when Gallagher and Anderson’s deals expire. Which is 3 more years.

Lol yes I know certain Habs fans don’t want elite talent, we get it. It’s braindead but we get it.

Unholy Alliance Not Looking So Bad Now
This is 100% the best move either team could make. I’d only do this particular deal once Demidov is confirmed to be gone though, but I think it makes a ton of sense. Bet anything the leafs would love London Knight Sam Dickinson. I’d add maybe a little more if we could get their late first in return, so we’d just swap our firsts+. Then we could use the leafs and Winnipeg picks plus whatever else it takes (Matheson/Savard etc) to move into top 15 and get the guy we want anyways. I’d also be willing to make the Marner trade based around Savard and/or Matheson if they’d prefer.

Habs management dream scenario
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>I don't think it would be stupid. I think if they can lay hands on a player who is "as good" as Iginla will be in 3-4 years starting next season and all they need to do is add a LHD or another late 1st, they would be crazy to not do it.
The Habs want to be good ASAP and not in 3-4 years when lots of players are going to be on new very expensive deals.</div></div>
The stupid part isn’t getting those players but building an entire top 6 on the exact same age group whose contracts will always be up at (nearly) the same time for very similar cap hits. You need impactful elc players to be serious about contending especially if you don’t have that superstar. We need to stagger the contracts. I think it’s even risky to get one more 23 year old but won’t be surprised if they do it. Definitely don’t think they’ll go for two though.

Habs management dream scenario
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>I hear you. I just think their "dream scenario" is to add two significant pieces to the forward core starting next season who are:
1) Between the ages of 20-25
2) Established top 6 players or players with top 6 upside
3) Complimentary to the group we've already assembled
and if they need to trade one, two, or even 3 first round picks and a few leftie defensemen to get it done, they will.</div></div>
I don’t think they’re that stupid. I definitely think they want one of those type of guys but definitely believe they want the other future top 6 piece to be from our draft pick this year.

Another Rossi Idea
If the Habs are committed to Mike Matheson, I do this. But I’d also insist we get Minnesota’s 1st round pick out of it as well. More than happy to package the Winnipeg 1st and other assets (if required) to get it done.
So the base for me would be: Guhle + 25 for Rossi + 13
I think it makes perfect sense. Minnesota gets their partner for Faber. Habs bet on offense, and could probably draft another D with the 13th pick to eventually replace Matheson.

Trading Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GuyGuyGuy</b></div><div>I don’t think the problem with him is that he isn’t supported by the organisation. He just can’t handle pressure, and going to a place wheresome fans sent death threats to a guy their team drafted and a guy that said bad things about them after beating them in the cup final. Marner won’t be able to perform under that kind of pressure</div></div>
Yeah I kind of just mean that we’re a much more balanced team so it’s not all on one or 2 guys. So I think he’d actually have an easier time performing. If this were a few years ago I’d say this would go exactly like drouin’s experience but I think we’re very well rounded now making it easier for top talent to perform.

I can see them betting on elite upside and being confident that the culture in their organization would support Marner. The Habs are also much more of a “team” and don’t put everything on 1 or 2 guys which I think would be very helpful.

They’ve been pretty open about this cap max not being the case if it were a UFA. And Marner would essentially be a UFA contract much different than exiting an elc or an rfa contract. So I don’t think that would be a concern.

Marner is perfect for MTL
Agreed. People are blinded by the leafs disaster if they’re claiming otherwise. St. Louis would revitalize him. He’d benefit so much by having Suzuki be the leader and getting to play with slaf. The leafs room just feels so toxic. Slaf and Caufield I think would do wonders for him personality wise.
I wouldn’t do it for futures though. It makes no sense for either team. Would definitely do a Matheson centred deal which would be smart for both teams. I think we have exactly what they need and I’d be willing to add (and Marner is 100% exactly what we need).

I’d do it but I’d base it on Holtz and the #10 pick instead. Feel like it could be a bigger package though if we added some D also which they clearly need.

Next season
I think the Marner deal would take more, but I also think it would be an excellent bet for both sides. Despite all the drama I think he’d thrive under Marty and be calmed by Suzuki and allowed to let lose with Slaf and Caufield. I just think he puts so much pressure on himself and it just always explodes. But I think in the right environment he could legitimately go off.

I could see him being enticed by a package around Matheson or Savard. Seems like the “vet” type. Calgary would be so pissed though ohhh boyyy.

Does Ottawa want to get their draft pick guy
They’d obviously have to weigh the risk especially if Demidov or Lindstrom are there….but we’d finally be in a good position to pull this off. The only reason we couldn’t trade down last year was because Arizona would’ve taken Reinbacher. But this might actually work. Still though probably only worth it if we have a plan to use the extra pick to trade up. Or they are absolutely sure we can still get our guy. But I wouldn’t really want to risk trading down just to draft 25ish when we already have a pick around that spot.

I’d do Matheson or Guhle for the pick straight up. I think Utah would definitely consider especially since it sounds like they want to compete and go for it right away. And they were probably likely to take a dman with the pick anyways.

Legitimately insane takes on Matheson here. Matheson ALONE is worth #9. I can’t even believe there’s people arguing that. He literally plays the top 5 hardest minutes in the league while being top 10 in points. On a steal of a contract for 2 more years. Like come on.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy316</b></div><div>Even Big Game Dave was surprised he survived the TDL and said Hughes was very open about it.
That said Kovacevic it doesnt appear he really talked too much with either cause their wasnt a market or he see's Slafkovsky's and Xhekaj's Best Friend as the right mentor.
Matheson i think he'll move but he'll wait til the final year and RS if its what is required to get a 1st plus a valuable Prospect as is his style
Im more Worried the fact he coached Harris and Struble as kids and they mentored his and MSL sons in NCAA years later will have an impact on us being willing to move them.
Harris cant grow in this system at this point even if we removed all the Vet's it would simply save Struble not him.
Strubles like 14 games from requiring Waivers and is a bottom pair special teams Dman or at best #4-5 D like Alzner was before he left WSH and his life fell apart
Decisions have to be made though as Engstrom is Wirey and while he listens to Coaches overall very well when it comes to slowing down , enjoying the ride and living his life outside hockey/training he ignores them. It got to the point they locked him out of the Training Facilities i believe it was last fall? Dude never stops training and shows up before the staff 6-7am and leaves last. If he does that for Coach Houle in Laval he'll rise quickly as Houle is that "you earn your minutes" Coach who was about to send Mailloux to the AHL before Xhekaj saved his season.</div></div>
I’m not super worried about Kovacevic/Harris/struble and I think a few will probably be traded. I’m mostly concerned about Hughes’ relationship with Matheson and screwing over Guhle because of it. So if he’s insistent on keeping Matheson I’d rather they just trade Guhle this summer for some good assets (hopefully a vet RHD or some high end prospects/pick).
We could end up with:
Matheson - vet RHD
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux/Engstrom
