Description
3rd pair is just stopgaps until Morrow and Nikishin are brought up.

Prospects who could make pushes or are expected to land a roster spot over the next year:
J. Blake
F. Unger-Sorum
S. Morrow (after NCAA season is finished, expected)
A. Nikishin (after KHL contract expires, expected)

With the cap rising and a Jarvis bridge deal (would much rather long term), Canes have enough salary coming off the books and enough prospects that should make the roster over the course of the next 2 seasons, that they can extend both Marner and Slavin with relative ease.

50% retention on Marner costs another 1st at a minimum. See the Patty Marleau trade as a reference. And if it's a late 1st two drafts away, it likely takes more.

Canes fans rule 😂🤣 - hard to get anyone to care about your team unless you involve Leafs Nation somehow. Makes total sense that Marner leaves hometown and centre of hockey universe to play for a small market team 🤦🏻. Despite playing in the easier division, I’ll take Leafs chances in playoffs over Canes any day

That was more than 6 million in a flat cap, you're not going to get a 1st for 5 mill in retention with the cap starting to jump again. Bad comparable, look more closely to the Bailey dump, since that was actually slightly more than the Marner retention would be.

Either way it doesn't matter because Necas + for rental Marner is a beyond stupid premise to begin with.

That's why the Canes won more playoff series last season than the Leafs have in the Cap era huh?

Easier division; as soon as you play an Atlantic team you get 🧹 😂. But keep hanging those series winner banners bud. Either way, Marner ain’t waiving for Carolina

Cool, keep him. You think the Metro's easier than the Atlantic? Seriously? That's why there have been more Stanley Cup winning teams from the Metropolitan than the Atlantic since the realignment, right? So much easier! So easy in fact, you lost to Columbus and Washington in series... not like it matters, you'll be bounced by Tampa in round 1. Keep crying, and enjoy the long summer again

      Hit a nerve 😂?
1/ you just got swept - fact.
2/ past 5 Eastern Conf finalists from Atlantic - fact

But keep posting Leafs trades champ 😂; they are completely preposterous - like this one - but at least you’ll guarantee people will actually care enough to pay attention

And I'd counter the Bailey dump isn't a better comparable. Bailey's cap hit to the Hawks is $2.66m this season and $1.2m next. That's $3.8m for a 2nd. Mariners $5.4m cap hit retention easily costs a 1st, especially since there would only be a few teams who would even be candidates to take it on.

Oof, Almost like the Canes were missing their 2 best wingers while their third was playing with a broken hand... might have had something to do with it.
Your statement is incorrect. In 2021, there was no Atlantic division, so neither team in the finals counts as an Atlantic team. And if the division is so good, why don't you ever come out of it? Carolina have been to the ECF twice in the last six years. Last time Toronto made the Eastern Conference Finals, they got beat by.... oh would you look at that in 2002!

Bailey's contract was 5.5 though, was more my point. Yes, you bought it out in the end, but you have to pay it over multiple years. 5 for 1 year on Marner is a 2nd at most. The cap jumping proves it, and Marleau was north of 6 for a 1st.

I lean more towards your side on this. Recent history is 3rd 4th or 5th to be the third wheel in these deals.

I think it should be more than that. This is still 5 million against the cap for a year. A 2nd is where I'd place it. It's not the 6+ million of Marleau, but it's not the 800k we're eating to have made the Lybushkin deal possible.

To clarify, Marner would go to the Hawks with his full $10.9M, then the Hawks would retain 50% (so 5.45M) to go to Carolina? Toronto is not retaining?

I'm guessing so since the ACGM has Marner at half hit, not quarter.
