Caps Deadline

Créé par: erp01
Équipe: 2023-24 Capitals de Washington
Date de création initiale: 28 févr. 2024
Publié: 28 févr. 2024
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Capitals are going to be sellers this deadline, and have a handful of pieces that make them ideal sellers in this market. The moves made eliminate logjams in defense, as well as opens up the goaltending for Shepard/Stevensen to make the next step to the NHL and potentially become the goalie of the future. A lot of the youth gets their chance to show off their skill and Caps deepen their pockets with picks and a couple prospects to continue the retool. The additional cap space made by the moves allow the Caps to play as a third-party team in trades as well, getting even more picks in exchange for eating cap hits from players (Henrique, Wennberg, etc.)
Transactions

  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (TBL)
TBL
  1. Edmundson, Joel
Détails additionnels:
Tampa is in desperate need of defensive help, but don't necessarily have the pieces to get any of the top defensemen being shopped. Edmundson, while not the best, is an upgrade and TBL will be more than happy to pay up for his services
2.
WSH
  1. Broberg, Philip
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (EDM)
  3. Choix de 3e ronde en 2025 (EDM)
  4. Choix de 4e ronde en 2025 (EDM)
EDM
  1. Lindgren, Charlie
  2. Mantha, Anthony (2 850 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Oilers going all in this year, but need a tandem goalie and a scoring winger to replace Kane's lack of production. Caps take advantage of the great seasons Mantha and Lingren are having. Broberg's value is at a all-time low and will be moved for a relatively low cost.
3.
WSH
  1. Kakko, Kaapo
  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2024 (NYR)
  3. Choix de 5e ronde en 2025 (MIN)
NYR
  1. Dowd, Nic (650 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Rangers have been reported to be in search of a center, and why not get one who is a top PKer in the league, and will have one of the lowest cap hits in the entire league for this season and next. Kakko has been extremely underwhelming and Rangers will likely look to upgrade him at the deadline anyways. Dowd's reported value is insane for whatever reason and while I don't think he'll fetch a first, I feel that a young top 6 potential winger and a couple mid round picks is more than feasible.
4.
WSH
  1. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (CAR)
Détails additionnels:
Caps get the higher of the 2nd round picks (PHI or CAR)
CAR
  1. Pacioretty, Max
Détails additionnels:
Pacioretty and his agent control his destiny completely with a full NTC. Carolina seems like the most obvious choice, as Caps will likely avoid deals made with PHI or PIT, and Patches wants to stay on the east coast. Carolina is reportedly looking for a scoring winger, and a healthy Pacioretty will give them that, especially at a reasonable cap hit.
5.
WSH
  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (NYI)
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2025 (TOR)
TOR
  1. Jensen, Nick
Détails additionnels:
Maple Leafs are in desperate need of a defenseman, and Jensen can provide some defensive stability on the blue line. Although having a bit of a down season, he's rather solid defensively and would be enticing for Toronto to bring in.

Not even that it’s just edmundson isn’t really what Tampa is looking for

I'd argue otherwise but agree to disagree. Tampa needs defensive help, whether from the Caps or someone else, but don't have the assets to go after a Hanifin or another top dman at the deadline

Rags are going to overpay on a center this deadline. They're reportedly in on Henrique but may not have the cap space to make that work. Dowd at that price would garner a comparable return.

They’re not gonna fill the center hole and open up a hole at RW lol

If they want Dowd you’d get picks

I don't see how that is even possible for them. What prospects/picks do they have to cobble a deal together? The ask is multiple 1sts/A level prospects.

I could see retention being possible, but the cost would likely increase by a bit, due to Jensen having term on his contract.

I'm going in with the assumption that Rags are going to acquire a winger to replace Kakko in a separate deal anyways, so he'd be moving out to fix the logjam.

I would say an addition of a midround pick or low B/C-tier prospect. Could also see Leafs moving on from Robertson instead of shipping out a handful of picks.

I like Jensen - he’s be good add for leafs but $4M might just be too much. Anything around $3M & I’m in - may require a few changes due to retention but doable

They need a top line RW and a 3C… this trade means they would now need two RWs

Doesn’t help them

In all likelihood, Patches probably gets a 3rd or a conditional 4th that upgrades to a 3rd based on GP or amount of points generated. With all the injuries and whatnot, he isn’t getting a 2nd unless he really picks up his offense.

There's nothing specific on the Hanifin ask, and Tampa does have the pieces to make a.solid offer. Even more so if Hanifin only wants to extend with a select few teams, thereby likely reducing what other teams may be willing to offer for just a rental. In any case, there are quite a few better options that Tampa should be paying a 3rd or.more for rather than Edmundson.

Yea, I'll admit what I put is a bit of an overpay. He has been playing fairly well as of late so it's not completely overboard.

Edmonton says no. Not sure how Mantha replaces Kane “lack” of production when their numbers are nearly identical this season. Maybe Manthas exposure playing it’s McD or Drai boosts his numbers but by how much to justify paying as much as you have indicated here? Same with Charlie, his numbers are hardly better then skinners or pickards numbers and I mean hardly decimal places better, the price to pay for either player for very slight upgrades isn’t worth it.. there are better players available that fill other the same or other holes that would theoretically boost Kanes or either of the oilers current goalies numbers. Also, if Brobergs value is as low as you say then why would they trade him right now if the return he could fetch is so low? Although apparently his okay before his injury in the nhl as increased his value. Regardless, I’m very certain Kulak is going to be traded either this deadline for an upgrade/cap casualty or in the offseason for the same reason. The idea is Broberg takes his place in the 3rd pair as his cap hit is minimal and he is now NHL ready, especially as a 3rd pairing dman.

Tampa has Howard, Gauthier, Thompson, Duke, Huuhtanen, as well as other prospects that could be involved if needed. They would also likely move the '26 1st, '25 2nd, young roster players such as Perbix/Lilleberg/Crozier. Hanifin has also identified Tampa as a preferred destination(along with 2 or 3 other teams). Tampa could put a good offer together, especially if they were confident that Hanifin was re-signing. Regardless, Edmundson has not been linked to Tampa, and there are several other dmen, at least, that Tampa should be looking at before settling for a 6/7 like Edmundson.

I could care less if Tampa is on Edmundson or not but just because it hasn’t been reported that they are doesn’t mean they’re not looking at all options.

NH has an 8 team no trade list. He could tell Calgary he only wants to be traded to Tampa and that still wouldn’t work in Tampa’s favour.

Every player you’ve mentioned absolutely does not move the needle in Tampa’s favour. Several teams out bid Tampa easily. Calgary has said they wanted a CG like return. Not a single prospect mentioned is anywhere near Tippet. You could argue at the time each player was drafted they had similar potential but none has shown Tippet potential at time of trade. The roster players you mentioned aren’t good lol perbix is a ufa in after next season, him included in a trade for NH only waters down more valuable assets in a trade.
