Description
Similar to the Lindholm trade, Conroy gets back Schmidt from WPG to dangle with Kuzmenko and Managiapane at next year's deadline with a full season to bump his value playing more minutes. MTL 2nd not dis-similar to the value of a late 1st given MTL's position in the standings

Hanifin goes to Dallas to get Flames a D prospect to replace Hanifin.

Markstrom to the Devils. NJD prefer to send Mercer vs Holtz due to extra ELC year on Holtz. Very similar players. CGY prefers the centre due to wing depth in the system. Conroy caves last minute on some salary retention for Markstrom. NJ preferred more retention and a hoped for 1st rd pick by CGY turns into a 2025 2nd & 2024 3rd as a result.

Winnipeg has no incentive to overpay that badly for a rental and not improve.

Your logic on Devils prefering to trade Mercer over Holtz is pretty flawed

I would take that Oilers trade but, I imagine Oilers wouldn't want to lose 2 1sts

If I was Dallas I wouldn't trade Harley for Hanifin 1 for 1 he's more valuable

Mercer is more valuable than Markstrom so NJD probably say no unless they are super desperate

That Winnipeg deal is fair

Tanev is better than Schmidt and the asking price is a 2nd + a prospect

With no additionnal cost you move out 6mil in cap space to help you guys fill in the remaining roster spots for next season and not have 6mil sitting on the bottom pair

You can't be serious with that Dallas trade, Harley is already a top 4 dman, they aren't trading him to get Hanifin.

The Jets trade is the only one here that makes any sense imo and as a Jets fan I'm indifferent on it, Tanev is an improvement on a few of the Jets dmen not named Morrissey but he's so beaten up I'd be worried about him getting hurt and those assets gone plus not having Schmidt as a backstop.

While he is overpaid NS88 can probably handle top 4 minutes better then any of the Jets other dmen that currently aren't in their top 4, Samberg only looks good in a top 4 role against bad teams like SJ.

Edmonton is far better off just buying out Campbell instead of wasting that many 1sts to dump him plus take Vladar who carries a cap hit as well.

Can't see the Devils trading Mercer to get Markstrom.

You may want him to be, and he might have been 5 years ago. But this is 2024 and he isn't better now.

However, even if we say he's marginally better, you're not getting a comparable defenseman, a RHD prospect and a 1st for a bottom pairing rental.

If the Jets are moving out these assets, it needs to be a clear upgrade. The Jets have one of the top defenses in the league and Calgary doesn't, they have no incentive to mess with that.

Mercer was never part of Markstrom thing.

Holtz was the guy.

But since all that, other buyers have dropped out of goalie market, other goalies have come onto market, Daws has played well, Markstrom has not.

Decent chance Calgary missed their window on Holtz.

NJD prefer to send Mercer vs Holtz due to extra ELC year on Holtz. Very similar players. CGY prefers the centre due to wing depth in the system.

Mercer gets the 4th most ice time if any of our forwards. Plays wing and center. Plays defensive situations and offensive situations. Plays PK and PP. Plays in hard areas and in open ice. Has never missed a game. Is loved by teammates and coaches.

Holtz plays wing, has great offensive skills and instincts. Has struggled a bit with turnovers in bad areas at times. Is an elite shooter/finisher. Plays mostly fourth line minutes (to the frustration of many devils fans). While he is liked by our GM (and by Andrew Brunette last year), Lindy Ruff has never seemed to be a big fan. Result is he gets moved up and down lineup, and confidence swings are obvious.

Very different players and Mercer much more highly valued than Holtz for our needs. Holtz will probably end up putting up higher point totals, but is the guy we probably would be more likely to move. During Meier negotiations last year, Fitzy took Mercer off the table altogether. And when asked about Holtz, he reportedly said, “if Holtz, only Holtz”. San Jose opted for the larger package instead.

Hope that helps.

"Hanifin goes to Dallas to get Flames a D prospect to replace Hanifin."

Harley is not a D prospect. He is currently 2nd in the NHL in Defenseman goals and has established himself as a pretty clear top pair defenseman for the Stars. Dallas doesn't trade him 1-for-1 for Hanifin, much less add a 1st Round Pick.

You said the exact same thing about Monahan.

You're going to have to stop this at some point.

Lol. He hasn't made the Jets better yet. They've got a worse record since he got there.

He's been playing 2C every games. Jets fans already talking extension since his hat trick.

I said he's WPG future 2C even before he was traded. He fit their core age and is willing to extend long term on a Canadian contender for a reasonnable price. He wants to win in a hockey market.

Well hopefully he'll turn out to be a good pickup and make the Jets better. To date, he hasn't done that.

Edmonton isn't paying the equivalent of 3 firsts just to save $3M on AHL goaltending, that's ridiculous.

It's a very high 2nd, so almost a first plus a comparable player plus an RHD prospect.

The Jets have absolutely no incentive to move Schmidt at all, so why would they consider it?

Because you'll have about 10mil or less after signing Perfetti to fill in 2 top4 defenseman spots for one of the least popular FA destinations in the NHL, if you want to attract top end guys they'll need more money and they'll need to over pay

That's not a reason to trade Schmidt at or before the TDL. That's an easily solved off season problem. They can buy him out or move him then. There's no reason to overpay to move him now.

The Jets don't have to worry about attracting top end FA's. They don't sign in Winnipeg. The Jets only have to worry about keeping the guys they have.

A contending team eating deadcap like that when competing is a terrible idea.

Jets absolutely need to attract top end talent, that D core needs to improve if they really want to win and they most likely will need to pay guys over market value to convince them to come or overpay in a trade

The Jets already have one of the top defenses in the NHL. How much better could they get?

You still haven't provided a reason for the Jets to make the trade now.

DeMelo isn't resigned yet, neither is Dillon and you need to improve every year to continue competing

Right. But when the player coming back isn't a clear upgrade on anyone, like this proposal, you pass.

Paying a high price to make a lateral at best move and risk the chemistry of one of the best defenses in league to add bottom pairing depth, makes no sense
