Leave it, that's horrible for the Leafs. 34 year old pending UFA with maybe a year or two or serviceable hockey left in him for a young defenseman who looks like he's ready to make a big jump...

"The Maple Leafs expected more from Timothy Liljegren. And one costly gaffe adds to their concern"

"With high expectations going into this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs hoped the 24-year-old would take a step in his game, but that hasn't been the case."

"I don’t feel like I’m at the top of my game. I’m struggling with it right now," Liljegren said. "I’m trying to grind through it and hopefully find my groove again."

“He’s a guy we talk about daily in terms of needing and wanting more out of him”

Oh yeah, he looks ready!

Heh. If you offer two alternatives, by definition neither is "take it or leave it". squinty smile

He does? Makes a lot of mistakes, man. It's a big topic of discussion right now.

I feel like for the last 3 years Liljegren has supposed to have a “big jump” in development and year after year he returns the same soft defenceman.

He’s almost 25 he’s entering the prime athletic peak of his career, young doesn’t get to be an excuse for him anymore

Liljegren is almost 25 years old (April birthday).

He spent 4 years playing in the AHL.

He's due to become an RFA this summer.

He's coming off a high ankle sprain.

That's a tough injury to come back from.

Ask any professional athlete.

It seems Liljegren is at a crossroads in his career.

Does he improve?

Does he regress?

Does he remain the same?

It's "$hit or get off the pot" time.

My gut says Tree will trade him.

He won't give him away like CFACGM Leafs fans want him to.

But I think there's a trade to be made here.

It's the same development trajectory that Dube was taking in Calgary, obviously with a better ending regardless of what happens with Liljegren's career. Every single season, media, Flames staff, fan etc. were all saying this guy is going to have a breakout year, this is the year he makes the jump. Every single season felt like a let down. When a player is 24/25 ish teams are well aware of who they are and the fact there are negative reviews coming from the coach already on Liljegren, he's clearly not who they thought he was.

Lucky us leaf fans don't have any worries about Brodie not making mistakes, oh ya he is the leafs worse d-man and 2nd highest paid. This team has way too many holes in it to be wasting a 1st round pick on a rental. In the off season if they want to use it on someone with term, that makes more sense.

Still doesn't change the fact that I'm not trading a young defenseman whose had stretches of really good hockey for a 34 year old pending UFA when the Leafs are no where near contenders. I'm shocked you aren't up in arms about Abruzzese being included in this deal

Sounds like some TOR Fans have given up on the season and playoffs and are looking to next season already

Abruzzese’s worth nothing. He’s a throw-in/contract swap simply brought in to make Coronato happy to be in Calgary. I’d take McMann instead but they’re both just warm bodies that may or may not ever be used on the Flames

What's so special about Tanev to give up a first?

Don't like Liljegren? Fine. What is Tanev going bring to the Leafs this season that elevates them?

He prevents shots on goal and pucks in the net, especially against Top-Line and Elite Players and he helps his D-Partners play substantially better as well

What’s so special about a 1st Round Pick, which may or may not even generate an NHL Player and takes years to ever find out!?

Let's continue the fantasy that you are correct. Why would the Leafs trade Samsonov for Vladar. By your logic, Tanev prevents high % changes so Samsonov must be a star.
Leafs and Flames have near identical GAA. Tanev is Flames fourth best Dman. What's the fascination?

Treliving may simply prefer and believe in Vladar over Samsonov. Vladar’s cheaper and signed for an additional year and the swap might be required to help him secure Tanev who there’s a ton of interest league wide for, not to mention he’d be trusted more than all of TOR’s D-Men

Reilly’s obviously better Overall, especially Offensively, but you won’t find a better shut down pk specialist for $2.25mil/yr or less than Tanev. Nobody’s as cool, calm and collected and willing to put their body on the line to block shots than Tanev is. He has amazing vision, always knows where to be and/or where the play is going and he compensates for his d-partner jumping in to the play or being out of position

I don’t need to tell you the difference between an offensive and defensive defender, but Tanev is the cream of the crop when it comes to shutting down opposing skaters/shooters and blocking shots. You won’t get much offence or physicality from him but thats not why teams want him, they want him because he keeps goals off the scoreboard

Your logic doesn’t work because he’s only on the ice 1/3 of the time = 20mins/gm

Changes the fact that teams see him as a valuable trade piece. Crazy, figured you missed that comment seeing as you had nothing to the contrary.

Nope. Wrangler doesn’t care for me much. We’ve went at it before, but that’s history to me now and I’m indifferent to him. Why!?
