I would rather have 2.5 years of a 5.25m Charlie Coyle than 1.5 year of a 9m Tavares.

I would rather not make a division rival better while making my team worse.
By the way, I am not saying Tavares is bad. But this is the part of his contract that has bad value. Maybe when Toronto inevitably re-signs him in 2 years, his contract will be good again. Why would we give up assets for a bad value contract? And why would we trade a foundational piece of our defense for futures as part of the same trade?
