How do you go from Colorado getting fleeced in a Monahan deal to then mtl getting the short end of the stick in the alternative deal? It's impressive

Avs do alternative 2 and may even throw in an additional asset. Byram is not on the table, so scrap the first one.

In what universe are Colorado trade 1 and trade 2 remotely comparable?

Alternative Kiviranta for Suzuki. You don’t actually think that’s a real trade for Byram do you? CF cracks me up with the dudes that know they are straight screwing a team, here take this crap and give us a guy who I drop in the top pairing.

Hell no they don’t. If COL is smart they stay in a different time zone than Monahan, did the experiment with the slow bigger center not prove to be a failure already? Why double down on a similar guy getting 1/3 of his production on the power play getting 18+ minutes in ice time neither of which he gets in COL and oh yeah he gets crushed in 5v5 shot share. I can’t think of a center COL should avoid more.

I can think of one they should avoid more: Ryan Johansen. The simple fact that this sheds cap this year and next makes this worth it

Fair enough, as an outside fan I guess Im overvaluing Ryan Johansen and undervaluing Byram. My thinking was that Johansen can be flipped 50% next year and bring some assets back while Byram seems to not have met expectations and a 2/3 C + a young versatile D seemed to be equivalent. My bad

      Savard 3 years ago got a 1st and a 3rd as a pure rental at 1mil
      Chiarot 2 years ago got a 1st and a 4th as a pure rental at 1.75mil

Is it that hard to imagine that exact type of player getting a 1st and a 5th back at 1.75mil? For 1 more year on top of it mind you

I was under the impression that Vanecek was a cap dump at this point, maybe Im wrong, but thats what I gathered. Maybe a 2nd is a bit much but I wouldn't call it absolutely terrible if NJ get desperate enough to make a push this year and next

Also keep in mind who Monahan plays with on the PP vs at 5v5. Playing with MTL's top players is a big difference to playing with Pearson and Armia

Savard and Chiraot weren't 33 with way worse options on the market, going to a team with a super conservative GM come TDL who doesn't mind waiting until offseason to make his move(s)

Edmuson went for a 3rd and a 7th this past summer, that's a better comp for Savard

Be careful of what you wish for. I could care less about the cap next year right now, this is about maximizing a cup contender this season and switching Johansson for Monahan is like switching from Aquafina to arrowhead and expecting some sort of improvement. Checking the NHL edge skating stats Monahan actually has a lower top speed. Just no thanks Id rather just stick with the devil I know and if you have to dump him in the off season do it then.

I'm not wishing for it, but we know RyJo isn't working. If you can dump his contract and get a replacement at lower cap, less commitment, and that has a chance to work better, I think you have take it. This assumes something better isn't an option.
