Not that I disagree with you, but if that is the case, then there isn’t going to be a trade, that makes sense, even if he wants out. Trades like these are usually about flipping your depth, trading from a position of strength to fill a need. Much like Anaheim trading Drysdale to get Cutter Gauthier. Teams don’t usually trade from a position of need hoping to fill that same hole. This perspective trade is predicated on the idea that the Sabres have a plethora of forward depth and guys who won’t make this team based on the guys in front of them that would be very good prospects in another system. And that Columbus does not have a lot of forward depth, but has a ton of defensemen. A deal can be made here that satisfies both teams. If it’s not a right handed, defenseman they demand in return. It’s also safe to say that Owen Power still has more value than David Jiricek.
I think the key here is that there isn't going to be at trade, even if he wants out. As for flipping depth...that's great and all for Buffalo, but Columbus
does have a ton of forward depth both now and going forward (6 of our 12 regulars are U24), so that's not really filling a need for us. We need a 1RD, and even though we have tons of RD depth, none of them have that potential. Buffalo's prospects here would be good prospects in any system, even ours, but it's still not a fit for Columbus because we have so many others, too.
The two types of trades I could see Columbus making based on our needs are 1) shipping out
depth D (Peeke or Boqvist) for similar depth forwards, or 2) packaging Jiricek + ? for a true 1RD replacement (i.e. Power). Option 2 doesn't make a ton of sense for any team, so option 1 (which solves this issue by giving Jiricek playing time in the NHL) is the only realistic fix.
We're not going to flip our high-end prospects for more darts, no matter how good. We have
so many darts already.
