Trading Allen Monahan and a Package for Zegras

Description
If Zegras is available I think habs should pursue him. He's far from perfect but Marty might be able to get more out of him. They need offense. Not sure what the package ultimately would look like but I believe MTL has the trade assets to do it if they want him.

Long term defence vision:
Hutson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Konyushkov / Kovacevic / Struble / UFA
Xhekaj - Mailloux
Engstrom / Harris / Kovacevic / Struble

Roy will be integrated into the top 9 as well.

    Détails additionnels:
I do believe there is merit to the Zegras trade rumors. The fact that Anaheim couldn't come to an agreement with him on an 8 year deal when they have plenty of cap space tells me they are not committed to him long term. His most recent injury may be another reason the Ducks look to trade him as well.

Out of curiosity I am wondering why you think Zegras' injury has an impact on whether Anaheim trades him?

Exactly and why would a team trade for him right now while he is out 6-8 weeks??

Not a single thing makes sense

People has to stop trading Barron, in long term, I see him play with Guhle on the first pair. Barron is very talented and for his young age, he proves that he will be better than Konyushkov, Mailloux, Harris, Kovacevic, and Xhekaj.

Probably not enough for Zegras but if habs can somehow get him without giving up Reinbacher, Hutson, Guhle or our 1st this year I’d seriaouly consider it. Imagine with our first, we also get Catton,Eiserman, Lindstrom with Zegras….that will be a lot of skill which we desperately need

CGY 1st will have to be in.
Harris OR Struble will have to be in
I assume they would want Roy but is try to replace with Farrell or even Mesar.
Maybe an additional 2nd round pick too

I think including Anderson is whishful thinking unless Anaheim somehow wants him.

    So CGY 1st
    Mesar
    Struble or Harris

That would be my best offer for Zegras

Zegras and Verbeek already went through a contract dispute and insiders have confirmed his name is out there, so the Ducks were already not sold on Zegras long term.

Worst case scenario has happened Zegras is struggling and dealing with injuries. I'm not saying this leads to him being traded, but if Anaheim was already considering trading him and a good offer comes along I think they'd pull the trigger instead of this dragging out hoping Zegras bounces back and has better luck health wise next season.

A Zegras trade wouldn't happen until the offseason, never said this happens right now, this is a 2024-25 lineup.

I dont know. If you could target a defensively minded skilled winger, I would even tack on a 2nd to Barron... Sticking Out Tongue

The Avs obviously won that trade by A MILE . Lehkonen is everything a lot of fans said. He's an elite defensive stallwart, puck hound. This despite every Avs fan here saying Lehkonen wasnt worth anything close to a 1st or even 2nd rounder leading up to the deal!

You have to give to get. Kovacevic and Harris don't land you a top 6 forward.

Lavals coach was basically quoted saying Xhekaj is better than Barron (which I agree with - not even getting into the intangibles). I'm also bigger on Mailloux than Barron, plus he speaks perfect french and MTL took ownership of his situation, I doubt he's traded. Konyushkov is one of the top D in the KHL and was just named captain of his team at 21 years old.

But I agree Barron could totally be a top pair partner for Guhle, I'm not trading him because I want to get rid of him. I'd prefer to trade Matheson actually, but Ducks wouldn't want him.

Ducks would have no interest in Harris / Struble, they are loaded with LHD. Can't see MTL trading Roy, Quebec guy.

Anderson actually makes sense, Anaheim has the most cap space in the league and the main downside of Anderson is his contract.

No interet in Monahan. Winnipeg needs a 2C, not a 4C/healthy scratch.

Montreal only has one 2C and that's Suzuki, so unless he's available, there isn't a deal to be made with Montreal.

Barron is only 22 years old... and everyone knew Lehkonen was valuable but habs were in a cap crunch and it would have been hard to extend him.

Montreal doesn't acquire Monahan and a 1st if they keep Lehkonen... I'd take Monahan, a 1st, Barron, and a 2nd round pick all day for Lehkonen.

Monahan doesn’t fit the mold of Winnipeg. He’s not good defensively and not good 5v5. He’s good at faceoffs but he’s not an upgrade on what we have.

The RhD with top-4 potential that we'd be interested in is David Reinbacher. The first we'd be interested in is Montreal's 2024 (with top 5 protection) or 2025. This isn't a Pia Zadorov scenario where the team has no choice but to trade him. If we can't get the top price, then we'll just struggle along with him on the roster.

A point to consider that's often overlooked: if this trade occurs in the off-season, either Zegras has made a complete recovery from his various injuries or he hasn't. If he hasn't, his trade value would be at a low point and Anaheim wouldn't get a great return for him, so the incentive to trade him would disappear. If he has, and shown his previous offensive form with perhaps some defensive improvement, then how could he get less than the two elements I have described?

Honestly this is the feedback I expected, if you're trading elite talent you want elite talent in return.

I can't see MTL trading Reinbacher (they must have been big on him to draft over Michkov), and I wouldn't trade their 1st this year either because there's no reason to accelerate the rebuild like that.

Habs can create a package of valuable assets but its probably not in their best interest to swap any of their top assets for Zegras.

The problem is that we don't need a RHD for Zegras. Anaheim would only be willing to make a deal if right wingers like Rutger McGroarty or Gabe Perreault were offered. Therefore, the deal with Montreal is not very interesting.
