It seems real odd that of the two elder statesman UFAs Anaheim has to ship off, that you would want Silfverberg.

Even half retained, I'm not sure he adds much to a team. Still good defensively, still puts in effort and makes the occasional good play, but man are that guys hands gone.

for a 6.4 million dollar gibson I'd have to be paid a 1st to take that on. Wouldn't claim him on waivers, certainly wouldn't pay Casey+1st+Stillman. That's a package I'd offer for Swayman

That's not the fitzy I know. If he does I will be very very disappointed. He's specifically said he doesn't like moving for a goalie midseason, and from every trade he's made, it's been for younger, cost controlled, reasonably priced guys.

If Fitzy were to make a move for Gibson, I'd expect and hope, based on his track record, comps, and how I view gibson, that it'll be with significant retention, at a heck of a lot less than you think.

But imo, trading for Gibson at full price and giving up assets to do it would destroy this teams window over the next 4 years.

There's likely going to be a bit of retention. COVID prevented the price of regular starting goalies from being in the 6s. Anaheim is likely going to want the return of an elite goalie for Gibson like you have here, so NJ better at least have that cost under control since Gibson still needs to prove that he's a good starting goalie (which I think he could be), especially with all that term left.



Yeah, they should bring Henrique back instead assuming the combined cost is reasonable.

The reports are coming from a guy who (a) has followed Devils for only about a year; (b) still has “nyi” at end of email address and (c) claimed we “knew” that Holtz and 1st were part of Meier trade, it was just down to Devils debating to add Mercer or another group of prospects.

I can certainly see the argument that this is a realistic package for John Gibson plus a depth forward. (Mightn't you prefer Sam Carrick, who's cheaper and would take some pressure off Dawson Mercer by allowing him to play RW, or Brett Leason, who is much cheaper than Silfverberg?)
