Expanding Canes and Bruins trade

Description
First iteration I posted of this was just a trade between the Canes and Bruins, was Ullmark, Gryz, and Lysell for Skjei and Necas. Bruins upgrade their top 6 and top 4, Canes get much needed goaltending help while keeping the defense very strong. Seemed like most people liked the general idea of it, but one pushback I got that made a ton of sense was that the Canes would be unwilling to trade Necas unless it returns an NHL ready top 6 replacement. Which mean it gets expanded into a three teamer.

Canes get: Ullmark, Grzelyck, and Elias Lindholm. Big upgrade to goaltending, upgrade to top 6, slight downgrade the LHD depth but still strong with Slavin, Orlov, Gryz. Lindholm gets extended, Gryz ca

Bruins get: Skjei and Necas. Upgrade to the top 4 and top 6, downgrade to goaltending where they commit to Swayman as the #1 and promote Bussi to be the backup.

Flames get: Canes 2024 first round pick + Fabian Lysell. Seen a lot of Flames fans make mock trades that send them the bruins 2025 pick + Lysell for Lindholm, this is better then that.

I can live with this deal... it seems like it would work for Canes... Get another top-6 piece + the goaltending we need and the price isn't too much

That is still way too much for the Canes to be giving up. Goalies don’t have that level of value, and Ullmark is clearly being treated as the main attraction.

A separate problem would be Lindholm. Canes are going to spend any big assets to bring in an expensive rental just to play 3C. And they won’t pay Lindholm the extension he would want. Interesting idea, but probably not something the Canes do.

I would say it's too much for Carolina to give up. Make the pick a lower pick probably.

Seems like Swayman for Necas would be a more even starting point.

Less from Carolina (2nd or 3rd), more to Calgary (add 2nd 2026) and then worry about goaltending (a little)! I’d still do it!

No chance from the Canes. Goalies don’t carry that value. Us adding a first just put the chek’s kiss on the bad deal

Are you that low on Necas and Skjei?

Bc I'd say you need a 1st to upgrade from Gryz to Skjei
Another 1st or 2 to Acquire 3 million dollar necas with RFA control

You're giving up 4 1sts of value for Ullmark and Lindholm

Seems like boston just benifiting from 2 other teams.

In a very weak C market (and by weak I mean there's not another C on the market worth ****) doubt that gets it done for Lindholm.

If I had to estimate values:
    Skjei: 1st+3rd
    Lindholm:1st+2nd+3rd
    Ullmark: 1st
    Necas: 2 1sts
    Gryz: 3rd
    Lysell: 2nd/3rd

    In total:

    Carolina:
    4 1sts+3rd out, 2 1sts+2 3rds+2nd in

    Calgary:
    1st+2nd+3rd out, 1st+ 2nd/3rd in
    Boston:
    1st+3rd+2nd/3rd out
    3 1sts+3rd in

As someone who would like the canes to not succeed, I wholly support them making themselves worse and giving up futures to do it

For once I gotta disagree with the majority here

I feel like that would improve the Canes so much, Flames are getting a great return for Lindholm, but i bet they think they can do better

And i dont think potential rental in Skjei and Necas is worth giving up Griz, Ully, and Lysell (and im in favour of moving Griz and Ullmark for top 6 forwards)

It's a combination of low on Necas and betting high on a couple of RW prospects in our system that are probably close to ready for the show... I will admit that looking over the trade again it seems like a lot for Lindholm, Ullmark, and Gryz... I'd probably want to take out Skjei and maybe downgrade the pick to like a third

The original deal is too much because it doesn’t properly value the Skjei to Grz drop, but this deal here basically tells Boston you aren’t interested at all. You can go dumpster diving with the rest of the teams with bad goalie situations. There are enough of them with fans pointing to the same journeyman hoping to strike gold

Necas, Raanta, and a 1st for Ullmark and a 3rd seems like a reasonable deal.

I could also see Skjei and Necas for Ullmark and Gryz

Not sure I think either team does the deal, but Boston has no reason to trade Ullmark and Carolina has every reason to want him.

It's not cheap to say that giving up Necas+1st is insane price for a position that is absolute voodoo... Teuvo (with an extension) + a decent prospect + 2nd is a much more fair offer because it accounts for the generally weak returns that goalies usually get
The Hurricanes need a goaltender but not Ullmark specifically... Ned, Reimer, Mrazek would all be options and we about how they'd do in a hurricanes system since they've played under rod

Like I said … go ahead and go dumpster diving all you want. Pick up a journeyman and hope they emerge. A late second round pick isn’t enough to deal with the variance in performance between Teuvo and Ullmark.

Great goalies rarely get traded outside of cap issues and players over 35.

There are a lot of mediocre goalies that get traded in some sort of game of whack a mole substituting goalies in their place.

People point to the same few trades as if they are proof on either side. Limited sample sizes. Not enough to prove a premium or a discount. Just enough to prove that teams that have great goaltenders usually don’t trade them for whatever reason.

Skjei plays ridiculously tough minutes and dominates them. Fantastic on the PK as well, scores.

Even this year, Carolina has a 58% xGoals share 5v5 with Skjei on, 51% with him off.

I’d be a very happy man to see Skjei leave Carolina

I have a suspicion that they are going to keep him in the offseason (and pay him handsomely for a little bit) and pair him with Scott Morrow (UMass) who is probably going to sign in the off season. I think Skjei is one of the most underrated defensemen in the league considering how much he is in Slavin's shadow.

He's still putting up quite a lot of points considering how much he's been yo-yo'ed up and down the lineup... everywhere from the first to fourth line and is on pace for 24 goals

Yeah. I agree that the package I threw out there wasn’t well thought out, but I certainly wouldn’t trade Ullmark for Teevo and a 2nd. Too big of a risk.
